So very interesting to learn about the origin of such beautiful animals and how they have endeared themselves to humans.

This the first book with over 300 pages that I have read in over 60 years. You will find that the Mustangs are the real heros of the wild west. What they have suffered through and survived. From glory days to the Dog-Food Decades, to today. They are the true symbols of Freedom and Survival. There are sections in this book that will make you cheer and there are sections that will make you want to cry. How the Mustangs have survived against all odds. As the US Convress has said, "“Congress finds and declares that wild free-roaming horses. and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people and that these horses and burros are fast disappearing from the American scene. It is the policy of Congress that wild and free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this they are to be considered in the area where they are presently found, as an integral part of the natural system of public lands.” Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 This book explains all the concerns. The problems and how the Bureau of Land Management is not able to get a hand on the problem. It makes no difference if you are a horse lover or not, this is information you need to know about us. For more information on Mustangs, check out returntofreedom.org. It is a Wild Horse Sancuary.

A very interesting and readable book about the history of the mustang. It starts with the ancient horse and has some interesting information about the Przewalski horse. Then it goes on to tell the story of the reintroduction of the horse by Spanish settlers and Conquistadors, then on to Indians, westward expansion, and Wild Horse Annie. It wraps up with a trip the author took to the Pryor Mountains and I believe (although he never mentions specifics about the pictures at all) this is where he took the majority of his pictures for the book. This book is wonderfully peppered with interesting stories and, like I said, it was very engaging to read and does not have that dry textbook-like feel. I was surprised to find that in a book primarily about the Spanish heritage of the mustang there was no mention of either the Sulfur herd or the Kiger herd (the two herds with the highest percentage of Spanish blood). Even so, I do recommend this book to mustang enthusiasts like me. You will enjoy it.
