I’ve been dyeing my hair since I was 12. I’m almost 40 now, and after decades of saying “I’ll never bleach again,” guess who ends up with $30 worth of tiny packets or some sad drugstore box bleach? Yep. Me. Every time. So recently I had a grown-up moment and finally decided to be smarter with my money. I bought the big 1lb tub of Wella ColorCharm Powder Lightener—because honestly, Wella has been one of my go-to brands for years, and buying the tub on Amazon is way cheaper than hitting up the beauty supply store like I used to in my reckless youth. I mostly use this for my “money piece”—you know, the part of your hair that screams look at me and gets a fresh fantasy color every few weeks. This bleach handles that job beautifully, lifting my dark brown (almost black) natural hair to a warm blonde in about 45–50 minutes. That red/yellow tone it leaves is perfect for the pinks, reds, and purples I usually use—it actually helps my fantasy colors pop. It also works well with other brand developers, but if you want smoother, more consistent results, I still recommend Wella’s developer. It just vibes better with the powder, like a good hair duo should. Of course, this is bleach—not a magic wand. It works best when your hair is in good shape. Trust me, I’ve ignored my own advice before and walked away with crunchy, straw-textured ends. That’s not Wella’s fault—that’s me thinking coconut oil can undo months of heat damage. (Spoiler: it can’t.) Pro tip: Mix it fresh, measure properly, and work in small sections. Bleach waits for no one. If one side of your head gets a 20-minute head start, rinse it first. All in all, this stuff delivers. It lifts reliably, doesn’t puff up like a science fair project, and hasn’t let me down.

This bleach lightened my hair effectively and gave me the results I expected. It works quickly, so you need to watch the timing to avoid over-processing. Overall it does the job, but it’s strong and best used with care.

My hair is a natural very ashy medium to dark blonde (each of my 3 pregnancies has made me a bit darker + I don’t see much sun these days so I’m more of a dark blonde now - level 7). I have long hair with decades of highlights that I usually get done every 3-4 months at the hairdresser. Feeling a bit poor these days and with a good 2 inches of roots, I decided to get 2 of these packets yesterday and do the highlights myself with a cap. I studied thoroughly and liked that this is a white bleach with less ingredients than others - not sure how healthy those blue/purple dyes are that you find in every blonde product these days. I got everything I needed (cap, hook, gloves, brush, shower cap) from my local Uniprix. Remembering my favourite hairdresser telling me to always stick to the low and slow mantra, I mixed the two packets with about 120ml (nearly a full bottle) of the Echosline 20 vol developer they had there. Given the length of my hair, it was a bit tricky trying to do the roots before the already bleached lengths so I just went ahead and slathered it on in one go. I made sure I used every bit of product and my hair was fully drenched in it. I then covered it all with the shower cap. I was keeping a close eye on it and shot it twice with the hair dryer on high heat/low output for a couple of minutes. Within exactly 1h my hair was pearly white. No need for toner (I never use any - I was informed a long time ago that that’s usually a prop for either a bad quick lift or someone with a darker brown/black base trying to go super light). I’m so pleased. Looks as good as in the salon and my hair feels just as healthy as before - I used the KMS Color Care conditioner for blondes which is amazingly hydrating. Top tips - put loads of product on - the better the cover, the better the lift - don’t forget the shower cap to keep it all moist + separate the first very thin layer of your front hair line (ear to ear) and make sure it doesn’t get “painted”. This will smooth the result and limit the risk of getting one of those patchy front layers.

This was super easy to use and lifted well! Mixed it with the 20 volume, happy with the results! Next is the toner! I love colorcharm! Before and after pictures I only left it on for 10 to 20ish minutes. My hair has been through a lot though 😂
