Excellent toy that my active son loves!
My son is 20 months old and we have been working on his motor skills (hand, eye coordination)with a therapist. I got this toy hoping it may help him and it has been great. The second he opened it on Christmas morning he loved the colors and wanted to figure out how it worked. It took roughly one minute for him to learn about the hammer and knocking the balls through. He loved it and plays with it everyday. It has also been great teaching him new phrases like "ball in", "ball out", "hit ball", "ball down", etc. He also learned that you can push the balls through which he enjoys too. CONCERNS I HAD BEFORE I BOUGHT: I originally was worried that this toy wouldn't last long since it consisted of toddlers hitting it as hard as they can with a hammer, but I've been amazed at how well it holds up. My son is not gentle on toys and this one was built for him. The top of the tower has tons of dents in it now but I assumed that would happen. When you have a little kid hitting the heck out of the top of it with a hammer what do you expect?? But there are no cracks or evidence of anything beggining to loosen or break. I was also concerned about getting this because the balls are wooden and heavy. My son throws just about everything, especially balls, so I imagined many calls to 911. But, I got it anyway and though he has thrown them a few times, he seems to realize they are hard and can be dangerous so he doesn't throw them anymore. We also make sure to tell him very seriously that he can't throw these balls. I'm very happy with this toy and am becoming a huge fan of Melissa and Doug toys. They are so sturdy, colorful and fun! My son also has the set of little wooden alphabet blocks and those are great learning tools too.

Fun Toy with a few Oversights
This is a wonderful toy for hours of fun for both kids and adults alike. When my son got this toy last Christmas at eighteen months old, he sat with his uncle in front of the tree and played for a good half hour straight. What we realized really quickly, though, was that our son also liked using the hammer to hit other things, and people. The hammer quickly became a banned toy and has been stored high out of a reach until a few months ago, when my son, now two, somehow found it. At two, he still can't be trusted with such a weapon, just ask his sister. We had to remove and hide it while he was otherwise distracted so that he can never uncover it again. So definitely know your target when you give this gift. On a good note, this toy is not useless without the mallet. A good firm slap on the ball sends them tumbling through the tower with a pleasing wood on wood sound, which may be annoying to some, but I find it soothing. The balls are easily lost and can be turned into projectiles if one isn't careful. Also, even with short term mallet use, the balls are dinged up and so is the top of the tower. I can't imagine what they would look like with long term use. There is also a plastic ring around each circle where the balls rest so you can "pound" them, these plastic rings seem to wear out over time. This makes the ball rest deeper in the hole and will probably become useless at holding the ball at all in a few years. I guess time will tell. Also, this is an occasional play toy for my son, it is not one of the toys in constant rotation, so the wear is not from constant use. Otherwise, it is a very entertaining toy, especially for a younger audience, but just as likely to captivate the adults.

Great toy
Simple fun that is entertaining great quality I like that my son has to try to knock the balls through so it takes patience and persistence but once they get it through they are excited and ready to do it again also love the colors

My Toddler's Favorite Toy
I have a 17 month old toddler who loves books, but not many other toys. She will play with her wooden tea set, her wooden chicken and eggs, and a bin of balls and that's about it. I love the fact she is so interested in books, but I have been searching for a toy she really loves and I found it. This simple toy has captivated my daughter. And not just for a few minutes or a day, but every single day since it came in the mail. It's a simple toy: four balls, a tower and a mallet. The balls are kept from falling by some rubber O rings, but the rest of the toy is wood. My daughter hates holding onto anything so she really isn't interested in the mallet yet, but loves pushing the balls through the holes and retrieving them when they reach the bottom. She replaces them and does it again. Over and over. My older children have also been playing with the toy and beating the heck out of it. They said they wish there was a larger one for older kids! One thing I have noticed is the balls, when hit by the mallet by my older children, have slight dents in them. (I have included a close up photo for you to see.) The color has not been removed, but there are dents in the wooden balls. I am really pleased with this toy and highly recommend it to anyone who has a toddler. The price is amazing as well. It's a win, win. A captivating toy at an amazing price.
