Yes, you can remove. You would need a pliers to do this

I'm not sure what you mean by wimpy, but I have not lost an ID Badge since I got it. Before I had the clip style and I lost my badge about every other month. The clip closes tight and does not come off your belt loop.

Q: What is the total height of this key-bak, from the top of the carabiner clip to the bottom of the key ring, when not extended?

I leave mine at work but I would estimate 3 inches total height. The black portions (cabiner clip and reel) are a little over 2 inches

It makes a noise, but I didn't find it squeaky or weird.
