I'll tell you what it actually smells like...
Ok, first off, this soap is great. It lathers fantastically and cleans all the places. I even use it on my hair and I think it works better than liquid shampoo. The smell is unique. I don't usually do reviews, but this is needed. I don't think anyone actually captures the way this soap smells properly and, really, that's the most important thing about it. Most reviews say it smells smoky. That's true, but far from the whole truth. It's not a simple smell and I think it's best described by a story. Imagine you're camping with the guys. Or gals, I suppose, though the scenario I'm about to lay out is probably less common in that situation. You've stayed up late hanging out around the fire. The only thing around is pine so you've been chucking one quick burning log after another onto the fire for about 8 hours. After burning through the dry stuff and putting back several beers and a couple whiskeys you grab a few un-split, wet logs and huck them on there. They don't burn well but by this time you don't really care. You go to bed smelling like pine smoke. This soap doesn't smell like that. Imagine waking up the next morning (or really just the same morning) to a sun that is too early and too bright. The birds are chirping, which is nice, but a bit too loud. You get out of bed smelling like stale smoke, unsure if you're just overly tired or a bit hung over. You stumble over to what's left of the fire. It's the green logs you threw on last night just smoldering away still. You start stoking it and throw a few more sticks in there so that you can make some much needed coffee. As the fire starts to smoke more and then finally some flames lick the bottom of your pot you start pouring water in to get it boiling. You unsteadily slip and dump most of the water on your little fire, putting it out. A gust of hot steam, smoldering pine smoke and old ash hits you in the face. THAT is the smell. Really it's not a bad smell. It just brings up the wrong camping memories. I'm still going to use the soap. It's great. I'll just need to get used to the smell. My wife isn't a big fan of the smell, which is unfortunate because it's pungent, stays with you all day, and perpetually permeates the bathroom.

Excellent for Skin Conditions
I've used this for years, and I have yet to find a soap that works as well for eczema. ...and it does so while still providing moisture to the skin (which a lot of eczema soaps fail to do). I love the scent. It's piney/smokey and reminds me a bit of a campfire. With exercise, the fragrance really comes out to keep you smelling fresher. Fantastic bar, all around. Bonus #1: The scent helps repel mosquitos and other biting insects. I love the outdoors, and this is a really positive benefit that is often not advertised. It's not as effective as using a bug repellent with DEET, but for a natural soap that is really good for your skin, this is great. No harsh chemicals needed to get some relief from insect bites. Bonus #2: It eliminates body odor better than any other soap I've tried. By this, I mean that the "natural smell" of a human is masked very well. This makes it fantastic for hunting or photography where your scent might otherwise spook animals if the wind isn't in your favor. It's not a complete mask of scent, but I've been in many situations where I've thought that the wind change would give away my position and was very surprised to see that the animals didn't spook. Just a small perk up, and back to grazing. Another really great benefit that isn't advertised.

Good Soap, iffy Price...
Soap Smells great (if you like pine tar, which smells of a smoky campfire). If you like the smell of a bonfire, then you'll love the smell. But it's mostly just the soap that smells. YOU don't really retain the smell after you get out of the shower. There IS a minor linger, but it's barely noticeable and will likely be overtaken by your deodorant or cologne / perfume. As for performance? One of the best soaps I've ever used. It gets you CLEAN... Like glass after being cleaned with 99% alcohol clean... Your skin can "squeak" it's so clean... If you have oily skin? It's great. I've got kinda dry skin in the winter, and it doesn't give me any real issues. The ONLY complaint I have, is that it's pretty expensive for a <3.5oz bar of soap. It's over $5 a bar for a tiny (bit over) 3 oz. bar. It DOES last longer than some softer soap bars (Like Dr. Upright-Primate ;-) ), and works very well. But while this IS my favorite, unless I find it on sale I generally go with "Grandpa". His soap doesn't smell as nice, but it's larger and last just as long.

Intended for those with difficult skin.
If you have healthy skin, this soap probably isn't for you. For those who have chronic dermatitis, eczema, and other such ailments, this soap can legitimately reduce inflammation, flaking, and plaques (accumulation of skin cells). Yes, the color and odor of this soap are different from any other soap I've ever used. When showering, it has an aroma that is similar to roof tar or hot asphalt. I note that sometimes those aromas, while not outright pleasant, are also not offensive, if not compelling. The soap's version of this odor is not overwhelming, and it doesn't linger on the skin and permeate the room. It's a small price to pay for relief from skin problems. I bought this soap on a whim, knowing that 30 years of this-and-that attempts to be literally comfortable in my own skin have failed--so what did I have to lose? The first shower with this soap was world changing. I came out of the shower with no burning skin feelings. No redness on my face, shoulders, or chest. The next morning, my skin and scalp were not flaked. I was surprised, and for the first time in decades, hopeful about treating symptoms I had long resigned to just living with. Now showering once daily with this soap has kept my skin and scalp clear. Where once I was always snowing flakes of dead skin, now the snow is greatly reduced. I think I might get to wear black clothes again.

What’s that smell?
It will make your house smell like it is the middle of a forest fire. It’s good soap, lathers well, rinses easily. It’s small for the price. I wouldn’t know about the durability, because after the first use I immediately put into a ziplock bag. Then I put that into another ziplock bag because I could still smell it. So, unless you are partial to the smell of a burning pine forest, you too will regret having bought this soap. UPDATE: I threw it all out, the smell was just too much.

Rinses "squeaky" clean and does not dry your skin
CONS: Wish they listed and explained the logic behind their ingredient selection on Amazon. PROS: I like the scent and it stays around while washing It rinses off very cleanly Non drying Not oily or greasy Removes dirt - isn't that the real point? Not overpriced I have tried Grandpa soap as well as this. Both work well. I prefer the Packer's soap though because it does not seem to lose the Pine Tar scent as I scrub away. The Grandpa soap seemed to get this slightly unpleasant smell if I scrubbed for long with it; not sure what it is but it was not piney. The Packers seems to always have a pine scent. This does leave the skin very cleanly when rinsed. For me when there are occasional dry patches of skin that it does seem to soak in to and provide some moisturization. This probably won't solve Psoriasis or eczema problems by itself, but it isn't a coal tar soap and it most likely won't make symptoms worse and will probably help alleviate symptoms. As for ingredients it is mostly natural soap stuff with Pine tar as the base some binders a little salt and iron oxides for colorant. I have used this in combination with shower oil and it does work well in conjunction with the shower oil (Jojoba, Hemp, Black Castor, Argan Oils (20% each), Vitimin E (10%) with balance patchoulli, lavender, and scent.)

Great soap, dislike the smell
The soap quality itself is fantastic. It lathers well, leaves my skin very smooth and hydrated, and rinses off nicely. However, when I told myself I wanted a woodsy smell, this isn’t quite what I imagined. Thankfully the smell doesn’t really stick to my skin after showering, but while in the shower and even when just being in the bathroom it smells more like road tar or burning rubber. It is a VERY strong smell and honestly makes me a little bit nauseous. I’m sad to say I won’t be using it anymore because like I said the quality is great, but after trying it a few times I just can’t take the smell.

it doesn't smell that bad...
I don't understand the copious mentions of an exceedingly bad scent?! if I remember correctly, Grandpa's has an even more potent smell... I really like this soap!! (feel like this is one of the best purchases I've made on Amazon!) fragrance is definetely camphorous -- and, to me, invigorating!! (contains pine leaf oil.) but it cleans so wonderfully!! you feel a thorough clean without getting that tight feeling... you get out well cleansed and moisturized at the same time!! I really like this soap; will try using on scalp [hair... whether you have plenty (me) or not, the goal's to clear the scalp using the hair & wash it in that process...]. would like to continue this subscription!! thank you very much!!
