Q: Does one have to take down the rod already in place to slide the loop over the rod or does the loop open up in some way?

The loop has a small set screw to detach from the vertical rod. But if you use certain rings you can open and slip over the horiZontal rod and fix to the certain rod. Because our shower tub is 36 in wide I went to bed baths store to purchase a rod which I cut to length and then slipped inside the horizontal rod. It all worked fine

Q: Could this be installed on a popcorn ceiling (or are the screws too short to allow for a little bit of variability in ceiling height under the plate)?

Due to a popcorn ceiling containing asbestos and the Rod's movement, I would be concerned that every time it moves, it might dislodge some fragments from the popcorn ceiling. You can always use longer screws if you choose to install it.

Q: Can this be cut to shorten to 31"?

Yes, you can cut it. I used bolt cutters and then filed the end. Used the end that you cut for the ring not for the ceiling base.

Perfect, high quality

Perfect and high quality....but I have to say you need the appropriate tool to cut it down to size. Fortunately I had a contractor doing work at my house when it was delivered and he had the right tool to cut to size.

Perfect solution for hanging from the ceiling

I had the perfect bathroom remodeled but there was one tiny problem: no wall to mount the shower curtain rod to. After spending countless hours surfing the net and looking for a solution, I found these and bought 2. They were mounted onto the ceiling and I hung the rings and curtains. They don't seem sturdy when you hold them and even when you mount them but it's an illusion. The curtain rod has not moved for almost a year now and I'm not especially gentle. My 3 big dogs ranging from 54 to 95 lbs also take baths in the tub and occasionally pull on the curtain and it holds. The mounting on the ceiling must be done properly but the hanging rod and loop held up better than they look like they would.

Screw Doesn't Hold

Screw did not hold on rod. Had to drill a hole so that screw could go into it and ring would stay on.

Great support for tension rod, especially if you don't want to drill into tile...

I purchased two of these to help support my tension rod that seemed to slip once a month. These rods help support the tension rod. Has been installed for three months with no problems.

Shower rod holder.

This thing works great holding the rod up.Wiith the curved rod theres more tension and you need this option so the rod doesnt pull out of the wall.
