He picked up a guitar a few months back and started playing and I thought some 'pro' help was in order. The instruction provides easy to understand hand exercises and shows the proper hand positions and fingering techniques. Each of the lessons are simple, easy to understand, the video clearly demonstrates the how and it all wrapped up in a 10 minute exercise. From the basic 'how to tune' to proper fingering techniques, this is a wonderful place to start and since it is on DVD, you can stop and backup as often as you need. My grandson is learning quite a bit from this program. Review: Actually encourages me to play! - I have been "playing" guitar, (if that's what you call it), since I was 10 y.o., one of these that played a few chords and strum, then didn't touch guitar for years, then play again for a month, not for a few years again. Why? because I sucked at it! Now in my mid-fifties I picked it up again, and actually started learning things and ENJOYED playing, looked forward to it, actually started sounding like I knew what I was doing, played every day! Difference? THIS BOOK. Oh, how I wish I would have had this years ago! I can not recommend it enough. The "10 minutes a day" practice quote is quite optimistic, but it got me to pick up the guitar and play and believe me, there is no way you are only going to play for 10 minutes. You'll WANT to keep playing and learning... because your actually getting it and understanding thing's. Great book for beginners and those who have played a bit but needed help....The book explains guitar tablature and how to use it, easily. YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW OR LEARN HOW TO READ MUSIC! Teaches you exercises to practice, has bonuses to download, also has audio files you can download and play so you know how it's suppose to sound. That way you'll know if your playing it correctly. And just so much more, too much to describe and go over. Do yourself a favor and get this book, you will not regret it! Thank you guitar head!!

The first guitar book I’ve ever fallen in love with.
I saw some reviews saying that this may not be for complete beginners. That is somewhat true and hence why this book gets four and not five stars. I’m not a complete beginner, I’ve been playing on and off for almost half my life, and so I thought the book was in fact much easier than it actually is. The first 10 exercises will make some people want to give up and never look at this book again. I like that it is deceptively simple. ‘Ten minutes a day’ is a bit misleading. If you do only ONE of these exercises for ten minutes a day you may find yourself getting bored with this book. It will also take you such a long time to ever finish the book that way. When I found myself getting bored, I decided to maximize the ‘10 minute’ concept. Use a metronome from the beginning of the book. Start at 60, even 40 if you need to. Set a goal BPM (I play piano so I picked 120). Stack exercises—play exercises 4, 5 and 6; for example, EACH for 10 minutes. Track your progress. I’ve been doing this for two months and have made tremendous progress. Once I reach my goal BPM on an exercise, I move on to the next one. I really like this book. Out of all of the music-related books I’ve ever bought, I’m motivated to finish this one and move on to the next one in the series. I like that technique is such a huge part of the book. Many books go straight into playing songs, which is nice, but without technique, playing songs is daunting, at least for me. There is one con—the audio files are not easy for me to play on my PC. I suspect it has something to do with how I’ve saved the audio files (they come in a ZIP file) and will not hold that against Guitar Head. Also, I think I’d be willing to pay a little more for a spiral binding. It would be easier to maneuver the book while practicing if it had a spiral binding. Buy this book. Don’t be fooled by the title; you need more than ten minutes a day, but it’s not impossibly hard.

A great resource for beginner guitarists!
I recently picked up the guitar again after a years-long hiatus. It was like picking it up for the first time; it's definitely not like riding a bike! My main struggle was being usure how to practice consistently and efficiently. This book has helped immensely. From day 1 I could tell that it would be an indispensable tool in my journey to rediscover the guitar. I particularly enjoyed the routine it helps you build and the way it slowly increases the difficulty of the exercises using what you've learned while practicing the previous. Pro tip (even though I'm not a pro by any measure): Repetition is key. Read the instructions carefully and make sure you understand what's being asked of you before you begin. Then repeat each exercise until you've locked in the patterns and finger placement into muscle memory. Think about the way many pros can play the most complex riffs and licks without looking at their instrument. This is the way they do it. It's a skill, not a talent! One that you can develop by using this book. Highly recommended; you will not be disappointed!

These Guitarhead Books are great for Seniors
There are soo many exercises for your fingers for the guitar that I have never heard of until I got this book... Very well done, and easy to understand for old farts like me just beginning with the instrument.

Could be better
It's a good start, but the chord charts don't follow the lessons. They only show the new chords and expect you to remember the chords from 10 pages earlier. Mind you, this 10 pages spans about 3 days. Please show all the chord fingerings used in a lesson.
