FUN BUT ITS A LOT OF WORK
Ok friends this is a cool toy. The SPHERO APP IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON ANY APP STORE. After 3 hours of research I found that you can download SPHERO EDU and control the toy from there. Once you download and create an account, go to drive on the lower end of the screen. That will allot you to control it in any direction. Next go to programs, search droids. And Sphero will list 2 programs. Inside the program is computer language that others created. Within the droid you own will have a string of programming that you can use to make them make noise and perform preprogrammed behaviors. I hope this helps.

R2-D2 App
Works great but the original app is no longer on the Appstore. However, there is another app on the app store called legacy bot controller which works great!

My grandson loves it
I bought the device to stage in my cave and to occasionally run around the house my grandson asked to control it one day and he had a blast even though he has no clue about the character. Well made excellent buy for any Star Wars fan.

Yes, you can bring R2D2 to life
To make this guy work, download the Sphero Edu app on your phone or computer. They have a simple control to make him move and spin. For more programs that fully use the motion, sound, and lights search the internet "edu.sphero.com" R2D2. I found about 20 out there. It is not hard to edit these programs and create new programs. I will create some videos on my talkzcheep youtube when I have time. One fun thing for little kids is to go to Create Program and select draw mode. R2D2 will follow any path you draw for him. It is easier to program on your computer than on your phone.

Sphero has to give us the app
It's a good toy but Shpero sucks. They remove the apps from the app store.

Definitely a collectors item.
Am glad I bought this back in 2017. I see the price has more than doubled since then. This is a quality collectors toy and not for under 14. Keep the box it will appreciate.

Programmable with App
Got mine in 2018. The original app was good and had some preprogrammed moves. The Sphero Edu does same stuff but you have to put in some effort to sequence some custom moves. All the sounds are there plus head moves and LEDs can be controlled in detail so it’s not an ornament or a brick. It cost $54 back then and still nothing matches it. One last note: R2Q5 sounds can’t be activated with the Sphero edu app. He was the neglected droid.

Great collectible — but setup instructions are missing and official support is gone.
Great collectible — but setup instructions are missing and official support is gone I love this R2-D2 droid — it’s a well-built, fun, and nostalgic toy for any Star Wars fan. However, new buyers should know that Sphero no longer officially supports this product, and the original “Star Wars Droids by Sphero” app has been removed from the App Store and Google Play. There are no setup or connection instructions included in the package, and without the correct legacy app, the robot will not function. To get it working, you’ll need to install the archived app manually (APK on Android or IPA via AltStore on iPhone). Once it’s running, the droid works perfectly — it moves, lights up, and makes authentic R2-D2 sounds. Overall: a fantastic piece for collectors and tech enthusiasts, but don’t expect plug-and-play support or help from Sphero’s website anymore. P.S. The package came with damaged packaging. I think the price should be lower.

Absolutely awesome. It was a birthday present for my neice and she loves it. Couldn't find this anywhere they were sold out. Then I found it here on Amazon Australia thank goodness. Thank you Amazon

As a mid-late forties man I am not ashamed to admit that I got this for myself. Huge fan of Star Wars, love geeky toys and tech and loved the look of what they've done this. The price drop and availability made me decide to go for it. I have to say it's an impressive piece of kit. It's not huge, standing less than 7 inches tall, but not tiny either. It feels solid and well put together and it looks perfect (perhaps not the finish you can get with build you own models costing ten times more but good none the less). It comes beautifully packed in a solid premium box (that i will be keeping should it store it at some stage). Set-up is very easy; simply plug the usb into a usb charging plug or device, download the app on your device (I used an Ipad Pro) and connect it. It updates the firmware and then Artoo is all yours. Using it is very easy. There are various modes including a remote control mode, a patrol mode where Artoo will wander around by himself, an AR mode (which feels fairly tacked on really) and a viewing mode where he will react to key moments in the movies. Thee is also a sphero education app that allows you to control r2 via a block based code editor or JavaScript. I’ve yet to play with this but will be messing with the JavaScript based editor soon. Artoo himself is lovely. His movement is spot on and the retractable third leg adds a real air of authenticity. His sounds and head movements feel totalkly authentic. He's a truly great fun toy for fans of all ages. Overall I am delighted with it, it will get lots of attention and look great on the shelf when it doesn't. I have given it 5 stars because I do love it but my one caveat would be the price. It is quite a lot to pay and i can understand this makes it a premium product and not for everyone. If resources allow though and you love Star Wars and Artoo? Well worth it!
