Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz Dog Treats: Potential Benefits with Some Trade-Offs
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz are dental treats formulated to help reduce tartar buildup in dogs. Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons to help you decide if these treats are the right choice for your furry friend: Pros: Veterinary Recommended: These treats carry the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, indicating they have been accepted as effective in reducing tartar buildup with proper use (feeding two treats daily). Long-Lasting Chew: The long-lasting chew texture can help keep your dog occupied and potentially scrape away plaque and tartar buildup as they chew. Dental Benefits: If effective, these chews could help promote better dental health for your dog, reducing the risk of dental disease. Variety of Sizes: Purina Pro Plan Dental Chewz come in different sizes to accommodate dogs of various breeds and sizes. Relatively Affordable: Compared to some veterinary-exclusive dental chews, these treats are a more affordable option. Cons: Unknown Ingredients: The specific ingredients list might be difficult to find. This can be a concern for dog owners with allergies or those who prefer more transparency about what their pet is ingesting. Mixed Reviews on Effectiveness: While some users report success with reducing tartar, others mention minimal improvement or their dog losing interest in the chews. Potential Digestive Issues: Some dogs might experience digestive upset, especially if not introduced gradually. Not a Substitute for Brushing: Dental chews should be used as a supplement to regular vet checkups and proper dental hygiene practices, like teeth brushing. Overall: Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz offer a potentially effective and affordable way to support your dog's dental health, with the VOHC seal adding credibility. However, the unknown ingredients list, mixed effectiveness reviews, and potential for digestive issues are drawbacks to consider. Here are some additional things to consider before purchasing: Your Dog's Dental Needs: Talk to your veterinarian about your dog's specific dental health and if these treats are suitable for their needs. Your Dog's Preferences: Not all dogs enjoy the taste or texture of dental chews. Consider offering a small sample first to see if your dog likes them. Introduce Gradually: Start with a small piece and monitor your dog for any digestive issues. I hope this review helps you decide if Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets Dental Chewz are the right dental treat option for your dog!

Good but large sized
Yummy and cat likes. A large ball shape that is a bit larger than I think it should be. I usually crush a little because she seems to struggle with them in her mouth. but that doesn't stop her. She likes them. I use the same brand chow which is the only one her barfy little system seems to tolerate.

Long lasting and dogs love them!
My ShihTzu / Cocker Spaniel Mix dog loves these. She chews on them for a long time, so one box lasts us quite awhile.

Much larger size than expected and Much less of them than I expected inside the box
BEWARE: these things are huge and if you give you dog 1 daily, they will last a week. I was expecting at most, half of the size and double the contents. Instead you get a chew about the size of an average cell phone. They’re also very difficult to break in half to make them last longer. My dog loves them and they last long, I was just expecting a daily long-ish lasting chew. Instead I got like 6 large chews that lasted less than a week giving her one every evening.

Dangerous! Expensive!
DANGEROUS!! These treats are initially hard but become soft quickly. They Goldens were able to chew a small portion of the treat but then their saliva turned the treat into a rawhide type consistency. One of my Goldens tried to swallow a large piece and it got lodged in her throat. I was fortunate that I was in the same room and had forceps handy to dislodge this piece that caused an obstruction. EXPENSIVE: There are about 6-8 chews in one box. Directions state: feed your adult dog at least 2 chews a day! So, if there are 8 pieces in the box, this means that I would need to buy at least 2 boxes per week. I have gone back to Purina’s DentalLife which are chewable, less expensive and have done a good job keeping tartar at bay.

Stop your search for chew treats! You've found the one!
The vet gave our new 2 month old puppy one of these at her first appointment, and she loved it. They may seem a bit pricey, but they LAST and are great for dog's teeth and are made of quality ingredients. I use kitchen shears to cut them in half to make the box last longer. However, these are on auto ship now and will be until my puppy grows and isn't chewing as much. Stop your search for chew treats! You've found the one!
