For me Dinosaurs Rediscovered is a primer on scientific methodology that relates how our understanding of dinosaurs continues to evolve. The core of this engaging book describes how recent advances and breakthroughs in investigative paleobiology have radically changed the field of Dinosaur paleontology. Dinosaur paleobiology has gone from a speculative field to an authentic scientific discipline within the span of 20 years due to advances in technology and a wealth of recent fossil discoveries. This book is written in a layperson-friendly style. The author’s love for dinosaurs is palpable, and makes this book a page-turning, riveting read from one subject to the next. The author is a distinguished professor of Paleontology himself, and I appreciated the fact he was intimately involved with the many of the discoveries enthusiastically related in this tome. There are many thought provoking subjects in Dinosaurs Rediscovered. As a dinosaur enthusiast I was aware of the devastation the infamous 7km asteroid impact caused to late Cretaceous ecosystems 66 million years ago. But I was amazed to learn that this presumed extinction event was likely a smaller piece of an as-yet-unsolved saurian puzzle. The most thought provoking subject matter presented (in my opinion) relates to the impact volcanic activity played in the rise and subsequent fall of the Dinosaurs. Imagine a series of massive volcanic eruptions on Earth lasting hundreds or maybe thousands of years! The author argues convincingly that massive volcanic eruptions in the Late Triassic Period allowed Dinosaurs to opportunistically thrive and later dominate the Earth for millions of years. Ironically, these same volcanic upheavals in the late Cretaceous period had the opposite effect on Saurian longevity and hastened their extinction for reasons the author convincingly postulates . Dinosaurs Rediscovered is an engaging book that any dinosaur enthusiast will have difficulty putting down. The many illustrations, charts, and useful diagrams all help elucidate research findings and allow for trend clarification of many talking points. One of my favorite aspects of this book is the authors ability to persuade his audience with near-irrefutable data. I also appreciate his open-mindedness and willingness to embrace new theories, discoveries, and ideas. We know much about Dinosaurs already-or do we? After reading this book I get the sense that the future burns bright for the paleontology discipline. Dinosaurs Rediscovered would make a great gift for any Dinosaur enthusiast in my opinion-although a background in science might be helpful to appreciate many of the books finer science-oriented merits. I look forward to reading more books from this noteworthy and distinguished author. 5 stars! Review: Dinosaurs, the tour - There has been an explosion over recent decades in scientific knowledge and speculation about dinosaurs and this book is like hiring a top scientist in the field to take the reader on a tour through Jurassic Park (actually throughout the periods when dinosaurs lived). It is more a book about the scientific method than a comprehensive look at the dinosaur tree. Individual species are showcased and illustrated to make a point. The writing is not mind-numbingly academic at all and is geared to the casual reader interested in the subject as I am. This ability to explain a complicated scientific subject to an Average Joe is a rare skill bestowed on few and Michael Benton is one of the lucky ones to exhibit this skill. I read it a chapter an evening and enjoyed the ride. Highly recommended for any dinosaur freak or even anyone who ever wondered how fast T. rex ran.

Nice intro to modern paleontology
As a scientist in a different field I have always been somewhat skeptical about some of the claims made by paleontologists. After reading this book I found it very interesting to learn some of there methods and their subsequent discoveries. Overall a very good book.

High level scientific book
My highschooler wants to be a paleontologist. I got her this book to “make sure” that field of study was for her. This reads like a college textbook printed on the cheapest paper possible. She loves it. I have zero interest in dinosaurs so my recommendation is purely observational. If you are looking for a very scientific, higher level book on dinosaurs this is for you! If you want a basic entry level book because you “just like” dinosaurs this is NOT for you. Try “Life on Our Planet: A Stunning Re-examination of Prehistoric Life on Earth” I’ve also reviewed that book as well.

Great read
Great book to get a better understanding of past and present dinosaur research and the thought processes, motives and biases of the researchers themselves.

Dr Benton is better than this.
I have read several of Dr. Benton's books and he is quite knowledgeable about his subjects. I do not blame him but I blame the editors for dumbing the book down. It was downgraded to an 8th grade reading level. I discovered the same thing in another recent book I bought. How are people supposed to become smart if we cannot use technical terms? The word poop was used instead of coprolite. Really? Was there a good reason for this?? But the book still gets 5 stars because he pointed out a lot of new facts that I was unaware of.

an excellent book to learn about dinosaurs
Well researched book describing recent discoveries about dinosaurs such as their colour and feathers, along with how they evolved, how they lived, and how they became extinct. The book includes illustrations, mostly black and white and some coloured. Did you know that many US states have official dinosaurs?

Great book but very tiny print in paperback
I checked this out of the local library last year and really enjoyed it. I got the paperback edition for myself and though the content is the same as the hardcover, the print is very small and on some of the graphs and charts, practically illegible. Something to consider if you're hesitating about springing for the pricey hardcover.

Everything you could wonder and want to know about dinosaurs is in this book. Moreover, it's pure science, and very well explained, by incredible Michael Benton.

Highly recommended if you wish to read a detailed view regarding the evolution of dinosaur. The best book I have read on this subject.
