great book! very thorough!
The book is easy to read and very thorough on the subject of container gardening, specifically with do it yourself 5 gallon self watering buckets. I love that the author provides details on the vegetables he had the most success with and how he tackled challenges. I also like the many do it yourself alternatives that he presents. I highly recommend this to anyone starting out a simple garden using limited space.

Perfect for beginners (like I was and still am)!
An excellent book perfect for those just starting or deciding to start growing plants on their balconies. Wish I had this book before started and I would have avoided many of the mistakes I first made. However, I have no regrets getting it now, as I am starting to re-pot some of my plants and seedlings, and his tips and advice are invaluable. A super buy!

I learned in the introduction that you need 6+ hours of direct sunlight to grow vegetables on your balcony so I reckon I don't need to read the rest! I trust that the ~13% of balconies that applies to will enjoy the book. Maybe they could work that into the subtitle or something lol.

This clearly written little guide is perfect if you want to grow vegetables, herbs, and fruit on a city balcony (or even a country balcony to keep them out of the way of the deer, which is a problem for my gardener son in BC). Its a quick read, but covers all the basics, like how to deal with wind and watering problems. Reassured me that its perfectly OK to recycle soil from year to year - I'd been throwing mine out every year, what a waste. I've been growing tomatoes and herbs on my north-facing city balcony for a couple of years now with OK results, but I expect to do even better now I've read this nifty little book.

What can I say. I have several books on container garnening. This is number one. It covers almost everything. The photos are in black and white but the text to discibe them is great. There are several useful drawings to give you good ideas how to get around problems and also drawings how to make simple selv-watering comtaianers. In depth explaintions how to spout seeds, make them spout and grow to give abundance yield. The only set back is that the auther covers just elleven of the most popular crops -beans, beats, cape gooseberry, lettuce, peas, peppers. potatoes. radishishes. swiss chad, tomatoes and watermelon. On the other hand ther are lots of detailed information on a lot of herbs.Yes. my favorite balcony book.
