Q: How well does it hold its shape on its own? Good enough to flex and bend for a lathe?

I would say yes. I do not have a lathe but have 2 of these on my bandsaw. They both expand and contract well but hold their position or shape where I put them.

Q: Is the I. D. 4"? Will it fit over a 4" tube?
