Q: Is this geat resistant? I want to out this on my engine valve cover?

You can use it as a top coat on a ceramic paint like vht and you should be ok. I would then ceramic coat on top with a true 9h ceramic coat. Otherwise cleaning means likely using some sort of solvant which may actual degrade or fade the effex. This is very good stuff. I have also used a pair of fishnet panty hose and applied the effex on small items it gives it more depth. Almost a carbon fiber look. Way easier than hydrodipping and far cheaper for a unique look. Q: Do you think I could spray this on a knife with metal handle scales or would it make the action too sticky?

If you spray the dark scales off the body should be no problem. But this isn't made for knives-it's made for non-wear use. Get a good grind, polish & oil finish-that's all you need to make a blade stand out

No-it's not metallic. It's color changing, depending on the light source &angle. Sprayed over a gloss black, it's amazing, but not metallic.

Q: How large of area does one cover? Can it be used with Rust-Oleum automotive paint?

Don't know about area coverage, the cans usually list coverage by linear footage. Spraying in a straight line. A normal spray paint would list like 25 linear feet. Note that was a 12oz can, these are 7oz cans. Note I was able to do multiple thin coats on four hip caps and still had about half of a can leftover.
