A lovely tool.
I am very impressed with the quality of the plane, was usable out of the packet but after sharpening its taking lovely whisper thin shavings.

Excellent straight out of the packet
There is lots of internet info on Japanese planes, most of it warning about the amount of effort to set one up. I was pleased to say that this item cut excellently straight out of the box. All it needed was a few taps to set the blade depth and off we go. I don’t usually write reviews but have to tell you this is well worth the money. One of the best and most surprising purchases I have ever made.

Outstanding tool, but definitely NOT for the average diy-er
These planes must be tuned-up by the purchaser so they are ready for the use you intend. That is why I say although it is an outstanding tool, it isn’t for the inexperienced or the impatient. You will ideally need a pencil, a file and some decent sharpening stones, a piece of float glass as a dead-flat surface, some spray-mount and a selection of sandpaper / Lubrisil etc… plus the necessary skill (or a bit of patience and a look at some YT how-to videos. You will also need a small hammer to make adjustments to the amount of cut the plane takes. I don’t want to put anybody off buying this plane - just know what you are getting into. I have been making guitars for a living for over 40 years, and love using Japanese planes, mainly because they work “on the pull” instead of pushing them away from you… I find this less stressful on my back, and I have greater control.. If you find yourself getting the woodworking bug, you will quickly realise the pleasure that comes from using fettling and maintaining nice, functional tools. This is just such a tool. Sure, you can spend absolute fortunes on hand forged Japanese plane irons… and they are no doubt lovely things, but this is excellent for the price. If you are still unsure, but interested… they also make a very low-cost small, block-plane sized version with a 42mm wide iron, (£22.00ish here on Amazon). These make a great choice as an intro into Japanese planes so you can learn how to set up and adjust them really inexpensively..
