This book, however, was amazing! She wants to do a page every day, because it's really fun to her, and teaches very good 'common sense' placement, and map following strategies. She is very practical and a lover of puzzles, but she also loves make believe, like doll house play. I found the exercises super engaging for her because she could design an underground home for a mole, or design a car show arrangement by following directional instructions--pickup truck is east of the snackbar, but model A's are south of the pickups. Etc. That kind of puzzle skills. I did have to cut out the picture squares--takes 10 seconds. But if she had to cut them all out, she might lose interest. It definitely requires some adult guidance to start each activity, but I think now that she's done a few, she could probably start most on her own. All those basic skills are the first 1/4 of the book, then it gets into rivers, and actual maps with boundries it looks like towards the middle of the book and more complex map reading and country maps etc towards the end. I think it really helps teach how to READ maps--this isn't going to teach you where all the countries are for example. It does extensively cover states, however. I would like to have seen some exercises in how to read a subway map or bus map with transfers etc, but sadly, I don't think that's in there. Maybe the publishers could consider that for the next edition. Otherwise, it seems really good. Review: This Book is Near Perfect - I do not know why there are any negative reviews of this workbook. I have been searching high and low for a comprehensive workbook for geography/maps. Many of the materials I found were inadequate. I use this workbook for a wide range of ages from seven to sixteen. It does begin on an elementary level and builds from there. I am glad it incorporates some orienteering. The students make their own maps, follow directions, use a compass rose and do a small project on making a compass. The workbook is laid out in sections. Section 1: Introduction to Maps and Map Skills - Floor Plans, Map Keys, Map Routes, Compasses, City/State/National Maps, Map Scales and Population Maps. Section 2: United States Geography- Introduction to the U.S. and States, Boundaries and Rivers, Kinds of Maps: Political, Physical, Product and Climate Maps. Section 3: United States Regions- Pacific, Mountain, North Central, South Central, Midwest, Northeastern and Southeastern States. Section 4: North and South America- Introduction to North and South America, Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America. Section 5: Grid Maps Section 6: Global Geography- The Globe, Continents and Oceans, Hemispheres, Meridians of Longitude, Lines of Latitude, Latitude and Longitude and Time Zones. Lastly, Maps and Geography Review Sheets. Typically, when evaluating Geography educational materials the focus is either on U.S. Geography or World Geography. It is difficult to find a workbook that encompasses orienteering, city, state and national maps, specialized maps, neighborhood maps, state maps, continent maps, and longitude and latitude. I am writing this review to save you from having to spend hours searching for something you just can't find anywhere else. This workbook is educational and the student feedback is A+! They are always excited to do Maps & Geography.

Impressed!
Just got this in the mail for our 4th grader's first year of homeschool. So we haven't actually used the book yet and my review is based off my my first impression. I truly think this workbook will be a great tool for his geography studies. I like the activities that are sprinkled throughout the book. I've included 2 pictures for an example. I like that it covers so many key points about geography, like the different types of maps, world time zones, latitude and longitude, and hemispheres. So far, it looks like this will be great for this year, then moving on to studying world geography next year. I did purchase a Merriam-Webster Student Atlas (purchased here on Amazon for $9.99) with this and I'm glad that I did, as several pages include using an atlas in the directions. I also like: how the pages are perforated; the answer key is in the back of the book; the facts that are given for each state, which are broken down into regions. So far, I'm very impressed!

Great for additional lessons!
My 3rd grader likes some of these lessons. They work great in addition to some of the other work we’re doing as supplementary and complementary lessons. Some pages are more fun than others and some are really lacking in engaging content but I think they’re geared more towards older kids. The colors are nice and do make the activities look more interesting.

Very good content for a wide age/grade group, depending on level
I like how it starts off pretty easy and then progressively gets more challenging; I'm guessing that's why the grade span is 3rd-6th. I used it for my homeschooling 5th grader and we just used the content that she could learn from. I like how it's not each section is not labeled for specific grade, just different content, like cutting and pasting parts of a floor map to learning to read different maps, etc. I thought this was wonderful for kids who may ne self concious about having to work at a 'lower' grade level than what they 'are', or even higher. It's very good for extra work or introduction to geography, maps, direction, etc.

This book is okay, but the majority of the content is focused on North American geography. There is still enough in here to make it worth while, (especially if your child is interested in geography and maps.) There are 6 sections: 1. Introduction to Maps and Map Skills 2. United States Geography 3. United States Regions 4. North and South America 5. Grid Maps (very short section also drawing on US geography in some word sheets) 6. Global Geography As you can see, the vast majority of the content is relating to the US. Depending on your needs this could be a positive or a negative. Every page is perforated so that it can be torn out. But the pages are also two sided so not sure how that is supposed to be advantageous for a single student. I suppose for a teacher this would make it easy to photocopy worksheets for a class. Each page has room at the top for the student's name, so I suppose that might be the intention here. So, in conclusion this is a very American book, with American English and imperial measurements, and a focus on US geography. If that is what you are looking for, then this is a good enough book with plenty of content.

Excellent book. Very good coverage of US geography. Highly recommend this. Presentation of content makes it easier for the child to retain key details.

All in color. Good for teaching basic geography skills to a child about 6-8 years old. I recommend it. I am using it with my 7 year old and so far it's not too difficult for her. I do it with her.
