Marlborough’s Other Army: The British Army and the Campaigns of the First Peninsular War, 1702–1712 (Century of the Soldier) Paperback – August 13, 2019

This is a valuable book for anyone interested in painting miniatures of the period. Book provides very detailed information on all allied units in the fighting, to include annual strength, reinforcements and withdrawals, equipment and uniforms. There is very abbreviated narrative of the war's operations, with a handful of maps that do little to expand the narrative. This book is poorly written, with incomplete sentences, subject and verb disagreements, and faulty punctuation. The series really needs to provide better editors before publication, as the writing genuinely detracts from narrative and increases the time to understand what the author is trying to say.

I purchased this as part of a wargaming project on Marlborough and the War of the Spanish Succession.It is a very interesting study of the subject with heaps of information of use to anyone interested in this less well known aspect of an important period in European history.

This book covers in detail a much overlooked theatre of war, and is welcome for that. The colour illustrations are interesting but the B&W are very mixed, some are quite poor and indistinct. The maps are certainly useful, but the lack of an index is a shocking omission, and lets the whole thing down.

Contains Orders of Battle for various battles which is useful. However the number of times the author repeats himself is incredible. For example, the lack of cavalry horses is mentioned three or four times in one paragraph and repeated for a dozen pages or so. Was he doing this as filler or is it poor writing skills. I was looking for more biographical data on the commanders but was disappointed. Many sentences were started with a qualifying statement so no value added since reader is left with uncertainty. Very disappointing.
