Q: How do you put this back on after washing it?

The reverse of the way you took it out!!

Q: What is the difference between the old version and new version?

It's not as firm and doesn't fill out as the photo depicts. I have the old version and had to replace it thanks to a new cat we got and was very disappointed. It's not worth what it costs.

Q: Can this be packed back in the original box?

Yes. It arrived assembled (no assembly needed) in a sturdy, rectangular cardboard box (and the item wrapped in plastic inside the box). The item was not compressed in the box. I gift-wrapped the shipping box (after checking the time for damage) and it worked well.
