I want to order the navy ones yet they do not look navy (they look royal)in the photo, are they navy blue?

We wondered the same thing about the color of the shorts in the photo.The shorts that arrived are a true dark navy- not royal.

My daughter needs these for the volleyball club she just joined. How do i know what size to order?

They're stretchy so depending on her size. My daughter is 5'10" 140#. Size 9. She wears a medium but large would be fine too.

So stupid question but... can you swim in these?

I don't see why you couldn't. I bought them for my daughter for volleyball, but they would not be see through and would dry quickly.

xsm = 21"22" waist and 33" -34" hips. small = 23"-24" waist, 35-36" hips. Each size goes up 2 inches.
