Revised: Why did I wait so long? (I didn't the second time!)
** UPDATE: July 8, 2014 This should illustrate the value and precision of the LAMY 2000 fountain pen. It is a mature (Legacy) product with a classic style and the best value for an instrument under $300.00. Once you are hooked, there is no turning back! You will not regret making this investment (I did it twice). My LAMY 2000 rolled off my desk as I was getting my inkbottle out to refill it. I broke the NIB with my negligence at the Achilles! I cannot describe the internal emotional feeling when your chosen "go to" pen warrants repair. Unfortunately, I could not find a replacement NIB for the pen but LAMY stands behind their product and you must send it in for repairs. There is an approximately 3 week's turnaround time and approximately $60 + shipping & handling charge (fair price). I reverted to a LAMY Studio Stainless Steel fountain pen that I own. It was fine but it was not my LAMY 2000. In approximately 1 hour after using the Studio, I signed in on Amazon and ordered another LAMY 2000 XF Fountain Pen (delivery tomorrow). As for my damaged LAMY, it is a wonderful calligraphy pen now - LOL. ***************************************** I own several LAMY fountain pens the Safari, Studio, and the Dialog 3 respectively, but seemed to avoid the 2000 for some unknown reason. I am a graduate student pursuing a dual Master's and needed a motivation tool (symbol). I decided to part with $130 and invest in the LAMY 2000. It arrived...(S***) - I could have bought three of these for the price I paid for the LAMY Dialog 3! The LAMY 2000 is a fantastic utilitarian instrument (daily use). It is made of a combination of fiberglass and brushed stainless steel known as Makrolon (Lamy, 2014). It is not metal like the Studio or Dialog 3 but sturdy and not plastic feeling like the Safari (plastic). The 2000 is functional where the Dialog 3 is pretty and only good for signatures and the Studio is great as well and similarly priced in price. The real value is how the 2000 holds ink and why everyone says it lasts a week or longer. "Polycarbonates (PC), known by the trademarked names Lexan, Makrolon, Makroclear, arcoPlus® and others, are a particular group of thermoplastic polymers. They are easily worked, molded, and thermoformed. Because of these properties, polycarbonates find many applications. Polycarbonates do not have a unique resin identification code and are identified as Other, 7. Items made from polycarbonate can contain the precursor monomer bisphenol A (BPA)." Source: Polycarbonate - [...] I had bought 2 extra LAMY converters with this purchase (would need to replace them in my other pens anyway). I opened the 2000 and looked to see where to place the converter. What? It did not come with an ink converter. Okay, that is why I ordered 2 converters. Wait, converter does not fit. Where is the manual (for a pen no less)? To my amazement, the whole body of the pen is the ink reservoir and does not require a converter! You twist the butt end of the pen to activate the piston to draw ink into the body, explaining how it lasts a week or more! I could not see the line where the twist mechanism is (quality/craftsmanship) that required me to read the manual. A classic design and legacy product - I clearly understand the reason it is still around. References Lamy, U. S. A. (2014, July 8, 2014). A legend
I have to admit that I am a long time fan of fountain pens, but only in the recent 5 years become a collector. I don't have a huge collection, or a very expensive one, but they are pens that I found during travel that I really liked. Even the ones I don't use, get cleaned and stored away. I currently have three or four fountain pens I used at any given time. One is a 1.1mm stub, this works much like a calligraphy pen. Then I have a fine tip pen, and the Lamy 2000. First let me say that I read somewhere that the Lamy 2000 was created in the 1970's and has yet to have any major alterations to the design. I don't know if that is true, but what I can say is that this pen is the most solid built pen that I have ever owned. I have some parker, Ravel, Pelican, Noodler's, Shaeffer, and El Forest fountain pens. The Lamy 2000 beats them all. The weight of the pen is nice. It does not feel empty, or hollow, it has some weight to it. Some may think it is too heavy, but I have always believed it was perfect. The writing with this pen is smooth and perfect. There is no skipping, or flow issues with the pen. Cleaning the pen is fairly simple. Not as simple as a pen that can be deconstructed, but this pen can be cleaned using the piston. It is a piston filled pen. If you do not know what that is, it is basically a piston with a gasket on it, that moves up through the pen and sucks the ink into the pen. To fill the pen, the user dips the tip of the pen into the ink and turns the piston handle on the back of the pen. This is my go-to pen. If I could I would buy another one just so that I can have two ink colors with me. I would highly recommend this pen to anyone else. I cannot praise this pen enough, I really and truly love this pen. UPDATE!!! Hard to believe it has been almost 5 years since I bought this pen. This is still my number 1 pen. It is my favorite fountain pen. I have a bigger collection of pens now, but this is still the best pen I own. I cannot say enough great things about this pen. It is worth every penny.

Awesome pen
The design of this pen is very unique and fun to write with. I have had this pen a while now and the first thing that I noticed was that even though I ordered the extra thin nib it writes like a medium or heavy medium. I contacted the company directly, but did not receive any response. That was disappointing, but still enjoy writing with it. Filling it is easy and it holds a lot of ink. You can tell about how much ink is remaining by holding the pen against a light source. Since that viewing area is clear one can determine the color of the ink which is handy if you change ink. Writing is smooth and have had no issues using other inks. I could not give this Five Stars due to the issue with the size of the nib, but would still recommend it.

If I Ever had to Choose Just One Pen
The Lamy 2000 (EF) is everything I was ever looking for in a fountain pen. For starters, the most important element is how it writes. The 2000 is so smooth! An absolute joy to write with. The weight was well balanced and just right. Not too heavy, not too light. It feels durable. When you’re spending this kind of money on a pen, you want to make sure you’re not wasting it. The 2000 was worth every cent. My kiddo unfortunately dropped the pen and bent the nib so definitely keep this away from them. I loved this pen so much I ended up buying a new one to replace the old one (which can still be fixed). I use it for writing a lot so you could consider this a workhorse. The ink reservoir is big enough to keep you writing without interruption. My hand never got tired using it nor did it slip on the grip. Even though I have a lot of fountain pens, once I got the 2000, I knew if I ever had a choice to pick just one, it would be this. So happy with it and look forward to many more years of using it.

Well made and good price, but some issues for me.
The LAMY 2000 is a great fountain pen, especially for the price. I am replacing a Waterman which has died on me after many years. After searching, I wanted something with a sleeker look, more modern, and found the LAMY 2000. I like the partially hidden nib, as it give is a very contemporary look. The pen has almost a wood grain feel, and is surprisingly light for the way it looks. When filled, it has a nice balance, and writes with a clean line. The piston fill works very well, and I had no problem filling the pen. Good pen, with a very good price. Update: So I have had this for a few days, and have started to have issues with leaking. After emptying and cleaning, I still am having issues. I also found that I would have some condensation on the metal just below the nib. When I take the pen out of my pocket and remove the cap, there has been moisture on the metal collar. I thought maybe it was moving from cold weather outside to warm inside, but even first thing in the morning, after being inside the house all night, I still have this condensation forming. I have never seen this before. Needless to say, I am sending this back.

Excellent Fountain
I have been looking at this Lamy 2000 fountain pen for several months and I finely decided to purchase one with a EF nib. I am very happy that I did make this purchase it lives up to the positive reviews. I have come to really like piston fill pens and this is one of the better designs, the fill hole is quite low so you do not have to submerge as much of the pen down into the ink to fill, this helps with clean up. Also, the filling mechanism is easy to operate, though after seeing videos of disassembly of this piston system I will not be taking this pen apart. Cleaning it has not been an issue so far, using some pen cleaner and a syringe seems to work well. The nib I have found to be excellent, for a EF nib this nib is very smooth not dry at all even when writing quickly. I am left handed and have not had any issues with the "sweet spot" on this nib, I just gripped it as normal and it writes every time for me. I also find the ability to grip higher or lower on the pen, this is something that I have on my tactileturn pens and it is small but is a very nice option. This nib is considerably better than the Bock nibs in my tactileturn pens and other pens that use them so I will be using it more than them even though the tactileturn pens are a whole magnitude tougher and more durable than this pen is. I would rate this pen just below my Pelikan 800 F nib it really is that good for me. I think most people looking to buy a higher level fountain pen will enjoy this one, the nib is western EF not a Japanese EF btw and does deliver on performance improvements over the more common Bock nibs on the market. Happy writing!
