Another outstanding Audioengine product, blows the competition away!!
Great little product with a big booming sound. At the regular list price of $165 I would consider it an excellent value, but, at the Black Friday price of $135 it was super-outstanding!! We have a Bose SoundLinki Mini which my wife has used for years and I always was reluctant to use it myself, just not feeling the sound quality. So when it came time for me to do a few home projects that required me to get dirty and dusty and I wanted music, it was easy to say "hey I have to get something else to use so yours doesn't get wrecked". Ha Ha.It arrived within a day, and was already mostly charged right out of the box. It is quite stylish looking and build quality is excellent. I have owned Audioengine products for many years ranging from the USB DAC unit to the Bluetooth transmitters to the D1 DAC. Oh, yea, I have owned the N22 amp and P4 speakers as well. As you can tell I feel the product lines are an outstanding value.I am a picky audiophile type and will tell you I was more than satisfied with this product. It paired quickly, stayed connected and battery life was as advertised. It uses a standard micro-USB charging cable so compatibility with someone's charging cable if you don't happen to have the official one with you, is guaranteed.Well thought out and worthwhile product. The ONLY thing for me that I might suggest as a product enhancement would be to provide an internal storage bay for the charging cord, but that's nitpicky since cords are so easy to find laying around. Great product, well recommended.

A definite upgrade for me.
I read that the makers of this speaker were concerned about more than just the bass level sound. Good idea. There is a richness to all the sound levels. My previous Bose speaker was OK, but too concerned with bass. Maybe for younger users. But when I turned on the 512 at a hotel when I was traveling, I noticed the difference immediately. At much lower volume the sound is crisp and clear. A necessity on the road.I think of this as a more "grown-up" speaker that I am glad that I chose.

Battery dies WAYYY to quick
Just bought this in Feb. and it’s now May and the battery dies WAY to quicklyIdk how long it lasts but seems like that annoying low batt sound is always going off and I’m having to plug it in. Battery should last longer for only being a few months old. My Wonderboom way outlasted this one for its lifetime. I miss it. Wouldn’t really recommend unless u don’t mind keeping it plugged in all the time.

Excellent sound. I rate this #1!
The media could not be loaded. Punchy bass, balanced mid and crisp highs all with impressive volume output without distortion. ,it is just the right size to throw in a backpack .Simply the best!

solid bass and midrange, rattly distorted high end
Bought this to have music around the house and outside. Tested it out, sounded incredible for 2 or 3 seconds and then i noticed that the top end sounds like distorted, blown out macbook speakers. It's a problem with bluetooth audio, so nothing to do about it. aux straight in sounds great though.

Great, wide sound
The sound is wide and nicely detailed. Almost sounds like it has tweeters. Flat response with no big boost in lows, mids or highs. Buy for sound quality, not booming bass or loud volume.

As noted by others, potentially great speaker ruined by bad bluetooth
Although this speaker sounds very good for the price in many genres of music (classic rock, oldies, jazz, soft rock, world, etc) I noticed a specific and glaring sound reproduction problem which was present in numerous songs from the hard rock and heavy metal metal genres (e.g. from bands like AC/DC, Halestorm, etc.) I contacted Audioengine and one of their representatives, at my request, did some testing of a particular song which highlighted the problem by comparing how it sounded on the 512 (which only offers SBC bluetooth) versus how it sounded on one of their other models which offers the more advanced Apt-X and AAC bluetooth codecs. His reply confirmed: "It seems most prominent with the distortion used in the synth/guitar tracks in the chorus of that track. The specific way that track was mastered, with the distortion effect they used, typically doesn't 'play nicely' with the SBC codec. When streaming the audio via Bluetooth to our A2+'s, the audio sounded the same as when using a wired connection -- which would make sense considering the A2+'s utilize the aptX and AAC codecs (in addition to SBC).Though I'd love to have a way to resolve this for you, unfortunately we do not have a firmware update that can be applied to allow the 512 to support aptX. I can certainly respect if this is a deal-breaker for you with the 512, but I'd rather be honest about the results of our testing with this particular song than to act as though another unit will behave differently with this track."As you can see from that reply, it confirms the issue is not just with my 512 but with all of them. It manifests because the 512 only offers the SBC codec whereas it doesn't manifest on their A2+ speaker with Apt-X and AAC. Lastly, in response to my request that they provide an updated firmware to resolve this issue on the 512, they declined. In a follow-up message, I asked if the 512 was being discontinued or if a replacement was forthcoming. The rep indicated an updated model was not planned at this time. I find it very disappointing that Audioengine has acknowledged the issue as being present in all 512s and yet, despite the fact there is no upcoming replacement and they are continuing to sell the 512 to customers, they won't provide a firmware to resolve the situation. As such, due to this confirmed issue with the 512 and no resolution, I have no choice but to return mine and make others aware of this deficiency via this product review.

Audioengine Quality
This little speaker puts out great sound for under $100! Glad I found it. The battery is pretty decent and it shuts off automatically if not in use. Not terribly heavy either.

There is some low hissing noise
There is a low hissing sound when it's on. Like I can tell if it's on vs. standby from 1m. Quite annoying. If you have a good hearing I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise it's OK.

A Top-Grade Audiophile Ultraportable Speaker, with a Sub-Par Bluetooth Receiver & Micro-USB Charging
The Audioengine 512 is a great start for a company who doesn't have a history of making portable speakers. This ultraportable prioritises audio quality out of anything else, and certainly it delivers. Highs are detailed, Mids are clear & lows are suprisingly pronounced for it's size. No portable speaker currently in the market, including the Bose Soundlink Mini II can execute all frequencies so beautifully. The 512 gives you a full, balanced sound. To compensate the lack of stereo sound, Audioengine had done an amazing job widening its soundstage. You'll be suprised how the sound can fill your room. However, I'm quite disappointed on the lack of aptX bluetooth connection. This device only supports SBC codec which result in unclean vocals and high notes will distort unless connected to AUX. Micro-USB port for a product released in 2019 is strange. Having said all these, the sound quality is unparalleled and the pros outweighs its cons. Excellent choice for jazz listeners on the move.
