In my opinion, that would be a really "tight" fit. It handles my 15.5 in. Lenovo with maybe an inch to spare, but I wouldn't guarantee it. The quality of the Samsonite is wonderful. Perhaps you could find a larger size? Hope this helps.

Will this fit a 17" laptop?

No it will not. I have a 17" and a 15" laptop and it will only fit the 15" laptop. Having said that, it is still a great briefcase. I see some other people have responded that it will fit a 17" laptop. Not sure if they have the same briefcase, but it will not fit my 17" (HP Envoy).

Is this case sturdy enough to carry several books?

I believe that it is certainlt sturdy enough to carry severals books. I bought this case for my husband and we liked it but my husband returned it only because he wanted a case with a smaller profile.
