Epic setup for PC speakers, or as a Sonos/Apple Driver. Power and Accuracy.
Let me start off by saying these are way more than just computer speakers - but thats what I purchased them for (at least at first). They also KILL as stand alone speakers when used with Sonos or Apple (or other sources too I imagine). I purchased a set of A5+ speakers to replace my long running Klipsch ProMedia 4.1 system for use on my home office PC. I work as a Sales Engineer, with lots of time spent in front of my PC working on spreadsheets, researching and doing other work - all the while listening to a mix of streaming music and NAS served MP3 content. I also play my fair share of PC games, (MW3, Battlefield etc). I was (pretty) happy with the ProMedia - at the time they were one of the best options, especially for the price. I finally drove them into the ground and was searching for replacements. My local Fry's had frankly - terrible selection in the PC speaker department (at any price). Logitech? Please. I consider myself a discerning consumer - I love the high end, however I am value oriented. That being said, I have the means to spend more than most. I started looking at higher end monitor speakers which is how I found my way to the AudioEngine lines. The other challenge for me - I listen to a wide variety of music. Everything from Prodigy, to Korn, to Depeche Mode - Pop (I have kids so hello Katy Perry!)...Nine Inch Nails...Classical, and yes even Rap and Acoustic. And when I'm playing MW3 or Battlefield 3 - I like it to sound like WW3 is going off around me and give me the spatial clues to know when someone is coming up behind me. Speakers that typically give me the boom I want when I'm listening to Rap sound muddy when trying to hit the technical pulse of a dubstep or drum and bass record. I want my Bass tight and controlled. I also tend to like it LOUD (or at least be able to play loud when I want) without distortion or making my ears sore. Now at $399 a pair for the A5+'s ( I bought two - front/rear), they were considerably more expensive, but they sounded WAY better, and much louder. I was happy - and while the A5+s deliver strong bass for their size, there just isn't any way a small speaker can replicate low end frequencies. In my opinion, you shouldn't just purchase the A5s without the Sub if you are really into music. The A5's are hands down one of the best performing/sounding speakers at their price point. At lower volumes you can get away with out a sub, but once you start to turn them up, the missing/lack of low end is much more apparent and disappointing. Simple solution - I added the AS8W sub and I was blown away. Instant HUGE upgrade. Before I got the sub, whenever I'd show them off, I'd get "that really sounds good" or "those are sweet". Now I get "WOW". For those of you that are considering using these for PC speakers (and have the means) add them to your cart. You wont be sorry. 1100+ may seem like alot for 4 speakers and a sub (not really), but the build quality is incredible, setup options galore and the sound is amazing. VERY well matched. I can listen to them at low levels and they sound great...and turn them up. Sitting inside 4 of these speakers with the A8 sub is frankly spoiled me. I thought my Car sounded good with 5K worth of Focal speakers and two 10's. This matches it at a fraction of the cost. I am used to a tight, loud bass that has real punch, presence and yet doesn't overpower the rest of the instruments - and adding this sub delivered just that. If you have the means to go with 4 A5+s and this sub - you will create the ultimate 4.1 computer sound setup. It will rock a room HARD. I literally can turn it up until it starts to hurt - and it still sounds clear and tight. Which frankly was my expectation. Mission accomplished AudioEngine! I also purchased a set for my wife's craft room. She likes Maroon 5, Gwen Stefani - Pop mostly. I hooked it into our Sonos system. It sounded good enough for her (the A5+ by themselves (one pair)), but again -needed more low end. I added this sub under her desk and last night I hear her showing it off to her girlfriends (not the speakers - she didn't even notice how nice they look), but rather listen to this! They spent the next hour just listening to different songs. AudioEngine needs to get with Sonos and bundle as its a fantastic combination. Did I mention it will f'kin ROCK a room? Seriously. Highly recommended at the price point. Not sure if this is what I'd go with as a DTS setup, but for music you will be thrilled with Audioengine A5 speakers and AS8 Sub. Bottom line - great bang for the buck and a necessary add on to any AudioEngine bookshelf speaker set. You wont be sorry.

NOW nothing's missing!
Title: Perfect Match for an Immersive Audio Experience! I recently upgraded my audio setup with the AudioEngine S8 subwoofer, paired with the A2+ speakers, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the result. This combination has truly transformed my listening experience, offering a rich, immersive sound that fills the room. The S8 subwoofer brings a depth to the bass that I didn't realize I was missing. Whether it's movies, music, or games, the lows are now deep and clear, without any distortion. It's compact enough to fit into my space without taking over, yet powerful enough to make its presence felt. Pairing it with the A2+ speakers was a game-changer. The A2+s already offer crisp, clear highs and mids, and when you add the S8 into the mix, you get a full-range sound that's hard to beat at this price point. The setup was incredibly easy, and the build quality of both products is top-notch, as I've come to expect from AudioEngine. Whether you're an audiophile or just someone who appreciates good sound, this setup is a fantastic investment. It's elevated my enjoyment of all forms of media, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Five stars for a product that truly delivers on its promises!

Big Things Come in Small Packages
To say I am pleased with the S8 subwoofer would be an understatement. I purchased this sub to complement my desktop speakers, and it does so very nicely. The build quality is excellent, the controls are abundant, and the sound is superb. It fits nicely under my desk, and I still have plenty of foot room to spare. I did a lot of research before buying this sub and when it came down to deciding the decision was easy. It checked all the boxes. It's important to mention the sub is not intended for large room applications but it is perfectly designed for small to medium size rooms. if you're looking for a great little sub to give your sound system a boost, this is it.

Excellent little Black Box
I purchased the AudioEngine S8 Subwoofer to complement the A5+ speakers I had recently purchased. What a wonderful sound! The A5+ speakers already had a nice sound with a surprising amount of low end, but of course the really low frequencies just can't be reproduced by a 5" speaker. The S8 Subwoofer takes over where the A5+ leaves off. A perfect combination. I decided on the S8 because of its compact size. Don't let the size fool you, it is a powerful little speaker. I get as much sound as I want out of this black box. No need to crank it up to maximum. It has plenty of power and output with the volume control set at its halfway point. It took a few minutes laying on the floor reaching around the back of the subwoofer to get the crossover adjusted just right. The sub can give you too much mid bass if you don't adjust it just right. That's because the A5+'s I have do such a nice job on the low end already. I would assume if you are pairing the S8 with the A2 speakers then you can have the S8 give you more of the mid bass frequencies. My only complaint with the speaker is the pointed feet attached to the bottom of the speaker. I put some scratches on my hard wood floor moving the speaker in and out of position near the wall, as I adjusted the controls on the rear. The pointed feet are too sharp. Felt covered wider posts would be better than plastic cones that narrow to points. This is a moderately heavy speaker. Maybe the cone shaped feet work better on a carpeted floor. There, the cones would have less tendency to dent carpet. I would suggest Audio Engine ship these subwoofers with a set of optional flat feet instead of a cloth bag. The improved footware would be a better way to spend the money wasted on the cloth bag. And I could have saved my shiny wood floors from scratches. I would have loved to have had a bamboo wood version of the S8 available to buy, so I could have matched it to my elegant A5+ speakers. I would definitely recommend the AudioEngine S8.

Great Sound - Easily Connected
I already had a pair of Audio Engine speakers and decided to add the subwoofer. I'm so glad I did as it greatly enhanced the sounds of the games I play. It connected easily and was integrated within seconds. I'm very impressed with the quality of the Audio Engine products overall.

Beautiful rich sound. Control knobs and setup guide could be better.
First, I don't need to add anything to what other reviewers have said about the great sound quality across the music spectrum, I'll simply agree with them. I do think the 3 control knobs on the back could be improved. Each knob is black and the position indicator is a small black notch on the knob which is almost impossible to see when leaning over the back of the unit - it should be marked in white or something contrasting. Also, the crossover frequency goes from 50 to 130 Hz (a range of 80) but the scale has 12 gradation marks (6.7 Hz per mark!) so it's not easy to figure what frequency you are setting it to. 8 marks would make more sense (10 Hz per mark). The 3 knobs on the back control the volume, crossover frequency, and phase, and I think the setup guide is a bit weak in explaining what they are and how to set them to get the best from the unit. The best phase setting is determined by the laws of physics, and if you don't have the phase set up right then you'll miss out on the best sound that the unit could deliver. Once the phase is set then your volume and crossover frequency will be very much a matter of choice. If you aren't an expert then here are my thoughts on why and how to set the phase: When sound waves are 'out of phase' they cancel each other out (this is how noise cancellation headphones work). When they are 'in phase' they supplement each other - and this is what you want. Set all three knobs in the middle. Find some 'rich' music with a good mix of treble, mid-range, and bass and adjust the woofer volume until it sounds about right. Now turn the treble and mid range right down so you are only getting the bass. Stand in the middle of the room and have someone rotate the phase knob left and right until the sound is at its loudest/richest. That's the setting you want. (Alternatively, search for a 'stereo test' on the web, look for 'polarity' or 'phase' test and pick the 'in phase' option which will play a low frequency sound at constant volume.) Once you have it set up about right, I recommend using a media player with good treble/mid/bass filtering which makes it easy to adjust the woofer volume using the bass filters. I personally like the open source VLC player. PS (now that I've had 50+ hours of use) this unit seems to take a few hours to loosen up. It sounds better now than it did when fresh out of the box. I would never have believed I could describe a sub as 'crisp', but it is - neither mushy nor boomy. After you've had it for a while you'll probably want to adjust the crossover and volume. Also I can't emphasize enough that to get the full benefit of the AS8 you should download a media player with a good equaliser.

Looks great and adds plenty of low end fill
This is how all items should be packed and shipped. Excellent packaging, plenty of protection, very nice plush bag on the inside. The sub has all the features you need, freq adj, volume and phase. Connected to my Jamo S 801PM speakers, which has a sub volume control that works nice. The set up is in my home gym and adds plenty of low end. Very nice design and sounds good. Plenty for a 14ft x 25ft space. Didn't even need to corner load it. Great product.

Pump up the jam
Was a great add on to the Audioengine speakers I had. The bass this gives off is excellent.
