NOW Foods Organic Flax Seed Meal, 12 oz

I have purchased this product several times now - in fact, I just bought another bag because I keep running out of it! Those of us who follow a lifestyle of eating to be trim and healthy moms, so to speak (you know who you are) sometimes make our own Baking Mix from a recipe created by another thm that calls for Golden Flax Meal. This is PERFECT for that baking mix! I use it all the time. Just this week I've made an on-plan chocolate zucchini cake, cinnamon oatmeal raisins and some brownies that are just to DIE for with my baking mix - and they are all sugar free and gluten free. Before finding this brand of Golden Flax Meal, I tried another that had "Flax Seed" in the title as well, BUT it was ***very seedy***. The texture was totally different! As I hope you can see in my pictures below, the texture of this ground flax seed meal is very nice. It is consistent, and really PERFECT for making my baking mix for my cakes, biscuits, muffins, etc. PROS: Perfectly ground with no seedy bits Beautiful golden color Nice soft texture perfect for baked goods (even those with NO sugar or gluten! Just ask my hubby!) I'm going to repeat myself here because it is that important to me: NO.SEEDY.BITS! 3 gms of protein per serving, 0 net carbs per serving and 7 gms fat per serving NOTE: 0 net carbs because there are 6 g total carbs and 6 carbs of dietary fiber. To calculate net carbs, subtract the dietary fiber from the total - which is, in this case, 6-6, or 0 CONS: Not one! CONCLUSION: I have used this to make batch after batch after batch of my baking mix that I use for all my on-plan baked goods. When combined with the other ingredients I use in my baking mix, this is a type item that you can add carbs OR fats to it and still have a healthy snack or meal. [I am trying really hard to make sure I do not violate Amazon rules by naming outright the eating plan I am following.] Regardless of how you eat - if you are trying to cut out or lower the amount of Gluten you consume, this item can help you with that. I will say that I do recommend keeping this product in cold storage. Although the flaxseed in this has been thoroughly and completely ground to unctuous smoothness, it will stay fresher and the most flavorful if it is not stored at room temperature. It won't go "bad", per se, but the taste is at its best when properly cold stored due to the amount of fatty acids in it. In fact, it does recommend cold storage after opening. On the back of the package (which is not an orange canister for the 22 ounce, which is what I always buy - see pictures below!) it also lists other uses for it - add to cereals, pancakes, muffins, breads, meatloafs/balls and yogurt . One more thing - this item is also certified organic and is marked as a Vegetarian/Vegan product. I am not Vegetarian or Vegan, but I have friends who are, and that is very important to them! This NOW brand is the finest milled version of flaxseed meal I've found yet. Very happy with this brand.

These flax seeds are ground up very fine, which is great for adding to smoothies or other recipes. In recipes, it has a mild nutty flavor. However, if you like munching from the bag, buy the ones that are not ground up.

I use and love many products from NOW Foods, but the flaxseed meal was a little bit of disappointment. The quality is not ideal and the meal has an odd texture, more rough than expected, somewhat like crystals. I do like it's cold processed, so the product doesn't start getting rancid from the processing. The flavor is quite mild, not nutty enough. In some baked recipes it develops that flax specific fishy taste, but I had worse. If I liked something about this flax meal is that it's really absorbent, works very well to do a flax egg (1 tbsp of flaxmeal + 3 tbsp of water). Mixed into oatmeal it adds more volume and satiety. The flax meal worked well for baking in gluten free recipes. The product looses freshness quickly. I know it's better to purchase whole flax seeds and grind then before use. But I prefer the convenience of having flax meal, so I store it in the freezer to preserve freshness. While I do appreciate that NOW Foods packaging is recyclable through Terracycle, it's just poor quality plastic. Also, the zip enclosure breaks easily; you either need to use a bag clip or transfer content to an airtight container.

I do not have any issue with the product other than them sending me a product that is used by the tablespoon with an expiration date in a month and a half. Im not sure what the shelf life is, but this package has been sitting around for probably and extended period of time.

This flaxseed meal blends well with everything -- oatmeal, cereal, smoothies -- no real taste to it at all. I like that it's organic, the price is reasonable and ground flaxseed as I understand it is more easily absorbed than whole flaxseeds. I suppose the next best thing would be to buy whole flax seeds and grind them yourself, but i'm not quite that committed.

This is the version of Flax Seed that I use for my sugar gliders. They seem to enjoy it in their diet. Keeps them healthy and thickens up their meal mix

I love this flaxseed meal it's moist and organic. I take it every morning to big tablespoons and a glass of water every morning keeps me regular. And it tastes great too.
