Great film and great to be building my 3D collection up

CLASSIC MARVEL FILM

Another Marvel comics movie. This is a prequel to all the others because it takes place back in the 1990's, so you can actually watch it without needing to have seen anything else. On the vague off chance that anyone hasn't of course. You never know. But as with all good prequels it does give the added bonus of those who have seen the films set afterwards of the chance to spot things that you know will turn out to be important. This begins well away from Earth, as the humanoid alien race the Kreel continue their war with the nasty shape shifting Skrulls. Kree warrior Vers [Brie Larson] is having troubling dreams. And can never quite win training fights with her superior. But when her life takes an unexpected turn, she finds herself heading for Earth. Looking for answers. And the ones she finds are more surprising than she could have imagined... It's an origin movie for the character. Thus it fills in all the background, gives them villains to fight, and leave things set up for a sequel. It does take a few minutes to get going because there's a few things to set up and fill in. But once she's on Earth, it really moves. It is a pretty clever script story wise, as it does have a great deal of twists and turns and narrative rug pulls. It does have a great 90's setting, and one of Samuel L. Jackson's best performances as we see a Nick Fury younger than we're used to. There are some excellent action sequences as well. Empowerment? It just says that you should stand up for yourself and be tough. It's not a message it throws in your face, nor is it one that is exclusively feminist. It's something that anyone can take heart from. Too bad the trolls will be too wound up to realise that. And cat lovers will love this film to bits. Just not quite five stars though, because even by the end of this whole origin thing, Captain Marvel is still a bit of a blank slate, and there's still a bit of work to be done with the character. But it will leave you wanting to see what she does - immediately - next. Good fun entertainment from a studio that is good at producing such. Do of course watch to the very end of the credits. The disc begins with the Marvel introductory logo, but you can skip it via the next button on the dvd remote. Language and subtitle options; Languages: English. German, Turkish. English audio described. Subtitles: Danish, Finnish, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish. It is of course a Disney dvd, so you know what that means. As it has for so long now. No extras whatsoever at all.

The best thing about this movie is Sam Jackson as younger Fury. He carries the whole movie, both in plot and comedy moments. As introductions to Heroes go this is a pretty standard, not so remarkable movie. It does the basic job, but if there weren't any more Captain Marvel movies, based on this, it'd be ok. Curious to see how she fits with the Ensemble later on. They've done a decent enough job of recreating mid 90s america for this movie, both in visuals and soundtrack. Stan Lee's cameo is poignant and funny, and what little we get of young Son of Coul is pretty great too. There are enough good things to warrant this movie one, maybe two viewings, but not much else. On the other hand, if you've been collecting up to this point, you're probably all in. Still don't understand why none of the special features are present in the 4K disc. It's pretty annoying to have to change discs after you watched the movie, and want to get into the docummentaries and other goodies.

Favorite of Marvel. Loved music and jokes

I would prefer a more gritty version, it's all a bit too clean and the HERO needs roughing up a little to make her interesting.
