Best handheld recorder I've owned
This is by far the best handheld recorder I've owned. I thought about giving it 4 stars because of the poor documentation/owner's manual, but the recorder is too good. A word of advice. If you plan to use external microphones, save yourself a lot of time and frustration. Be sure you have "Balanced" cables to connect the mic to the recorder. I had to work my way through a number of after-market "How-to" presentations to learn this. But before you decide on an external mic, give the onboard mics a try. I use my recorder to record our church's sermons. I want to keep as much equipment out of view as possible, so I mount the recorder on a low-profile tripod on the podium and point the mics toward the speaker. I use the stereo position. The sound quality is excellent. And audience noise is minimal. No regrets.

Awesome device
Really awesome piece of equipment I haven’t even really dived into it to much since I’ve bought it , but I’ve taken it on a cruise on the airplane and got some cool foley samples, and it held up nicely. Picks up everything I swear I could hear someone fart across the parking lot with this thing

Accurate and easy to use field recorder
I am not an audio recording expert or professional at all -- just a hobbyist. I bought this to use with my drone so I can capture my local city's 4th of July fireworks display and record audio to go along with the drone's video. For that purpose it worked very well. The red audio clipping light kept going off during recording when there were loud explosions, which worried me, but the limiter did its job and the explosions sounded great. It also picked up the quieter sounds, like the softer crackling noises, even about 500 feet away. The interface is intuitive and easy to use. The batteries lasted a lot longer than I needed, and I appreciate it can use batteries or USB power. Also I was able to easily transfer the audio via USB cable. The only downside I can find is that the windscreen can push the two microphones back together a little, if they are oriented away from each other. I "fixed" this with a very low tech solution: I folded up a small piece of paper towel, wrapped it in duct tape and shoved it in between the mics to keep them separate.

Pretty solid device! Perfect for digitizing analog media or recording demos
I bought this specifically for the purpose of digitizing my record collection and it does an amazing job at doing this. My only complaint is that when using it as an audio interface with the PC I am unable to run it any higher than 48 kHz, I would prefer to be able to interface at 96 which is the only reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars. This is somewhat trivial because for my purposes I record at 96 and mix the individual tracks down to 48 for platback and I can always just record direct to the device at 96 and transfer later. I just prefer the convenience of using the PC to control and monitor my recording. I also want to say that I am really impressed with the options for connecting to the device and the stereo XLR inputs that double as a 1/4" jack are a nice feature. As a musician I also plan to use this for recording demos and things of that nature and the connections paired the ability to do multi-track recording make this a handy device on the go.

Clean sound, good reverb
I bought this to replace a nearly 10-year-old version of this same model of Tascam recorder。 I loved the old one, and the new one operates just as well。 This is a very good, small recorder, and an excellent value for the money。 Batteries last a long time。 It serves multiple purposes。 I like the Reverb options it offers; I use them when I make final stereo mix downs to this unit。

Easy to use, durable and accurate.
The Tascam DR-40X did not disappoint. It is well thought out, durable and records accurately through the built-in stereo mics, or through the well-designed inputs.

This Does So Much More
I love this little recorder. I use it for interviews, voice overs, and all my recording needs. For interviews I mount it on a tripod with the 1/4" hole on the bottom and it does a great job. Although it does need to be fairly close, I keep it just out of frame. For voice overs, I put a foam cover over the mics and can record my VO while watching the video and it doesn't get in the way. However the best use I have found for it, is paired with my wireless lavaliere kit. I purchased an XLR adapter and plug the receiver in to the Tascam. This gave me awesome sound and I didn't have to be right on top of the actors with a shotgun mic or have a heavy receiver mounted to the hot shoe of my camera. If you are looking for a great recorder that has great sound and gives you plenty of recording options, get this recorder.

No internal Drive, Requires Standard SD Cards, Doesn't read the cards...
So I bought this and there's no internal hard drive. I ONLY operates via SD Card. I got an SD Mini and that didn't work. So then go a standard size and that had a "formatting issue" but it was formatted three times to what the recorder wanted. So I got this to record an event and paid $100 for it....and it ended up being a complete waste of money as it just doesn't work and doesn't read any cards. Awesome.

Great recorder with useful recording mode functions incl 4 tracks for internal and external mics. Inbuilt phantom power and playback channel mixer. Good construction.Easy to use. USB power input. But eats batteries so recommend buying a charger if you use frequently or for long duration use.

Tascam.
