Good quality!
Very durable nut chopper. Easy to use and clean. It is a good value for the money and I highly recommend.

Works fine but a bit flimsy
What I Like: The square design of this nut grinder is much better than its round counter part as all six grinding blades are full length. This makes for a more efficient and more consistent grind. It is easy to use on softer nuts like walnuts and pecans. The removeable bottom makes it much easier to clean and remove finished product. The grind, although inconsistant, is better than results in a food processor and far less effort than chopping with a knife. What I don't like: It is not a sturdy when grinding almonds as there is alot of flex in the handle, it takes a good amount of effort, you really need to secure the center of the crank with your thumb while turning a half turn at a time with your fingers otherwise it feels on the verge of breaking apart. The handle is also too short and too flimsy to get proper leverage on hard nuts like almond. Although it does a good job on softer nuts with almonds the entire mechanism flexes and unless I support it as mentioned above it feels like it will break apart. I also saw no difference between course and fine grind. Summary: At $23 this is as good and as sturdy as one can expect. I would pay more for a sturdier version that made it easier to grind almonds but I saw no such option. For the money I'm OK with it and it does give an acceptable grind for nuts used in sundaes, baklava, and to put over cereal. I am not confident in its longevity as improper technique with almonds may break it.

Top and bottom are fixed together so the hopper doesn’t come off while grinding
I had an old metal and glass nut-chopper that I really liked, but the metal tines broke off after years of use. I tried several new plastic versions with the same design as the “antique” one, (i.e. round bottom with a screw on hopper), but the hopper would come off (screw threads didn’t hold) while I was using it. (That included one made by Progressive). Not sure if this was due to shallow, inadequate threading or a plastic-to-plastic interface, (as opposed to a glass-to-metal interface on the vintage chopper). I bought the Progressive square version on a whim and it is such an improved design! Rather than unscrewing the top from the bottom to remove your chopped nuts, you simply turn the whole unit upside down, take off the flexible (silicone?) plastic bottom, and pour your nuts out. You can also leave the bottom on and grind and/or shake the nuts back into the hopper and put nuts through a second chopping with zero mess. The tapered shape of the bottom makes it easier to hold onto while chopping. The lid is attached with a hinge, making it simple to wash as a single unit. However, since I use my chopper daily, I don’t often wash it. The chopper has both a fine and a coarse setting, but I honestly can’t tell the difference. The chopped nuts aren’t as uniform as I would like, but they are much nicer looking than if I were to chop with a knife. Really happy with this device. I find myself using chopped nuts in lots of things because it’s fast and easy.

Excellent until it broke
Sharp blades and works well. It lasted a year before breaking, it is just a lot of plastic. I was happy when it worked, but am now shopping for another and will go in a different direction to try and find something more durable.

Excels with soft/medium nuts. Too risky to run Almonds constantly.
This is great for Walnuts and Pecans, but, for Almonds I've had to go straight to a deep-bowl mortar & pestle or a full on Grain Grinder set on coarse. I've busted too many of these hand-crank choppers with Almonds to risk another one breaking.

DO NOT BUY THIS
I thought this would be the answer to my hatred of chopping nuts or paying the high price of chopped nuts in the store. It turns out that the only positive thing I can say is that the retro color is cool. This chopper does not work!! The parts are difficult to put together and don't stay together when you turn the handle to chop nuts unless you push down hard on the top. And even then, if you aren't pressing down straight, the chopper topples over, the components came apart and chopped nuts spill all over your counter. So, after I cleaned up the mess, even though I was turning in the direction to produce larger pieces, at least half of what came out was powder (nut meal); totally unusable for what I was baking! I'm honestly not sure how you're supposed to get the "chopped" nuts out successfully. When I turned the chopper over to empty the bottom compartment, I apparently wasn't holding all the parts together strongly enough because the components came apart again...nuts all over the counter!! This chopper has serious design issues!! I wish I had returned this after the first use but I decided to try it again knowing all I had learned about it. The second time was only marginally better. I still had to man-handle it and I basically got nut powder in the end. I was going to give it to Goodwill but decided it wouldn't be fair to whoever bought it and threw it away instead. I have only ever written one bad review before this and didn't really want to spend the time writing this one, but I felt strongly that I needed to tell of my experience.

Works as expected, with expected sturdiness. Very convenient.
My grandmother used to have a very similar device to chop nuts when I was a kid. I've been considering buying one of these... And I'm glad I did. Frozen peacon halves were my first test... A little difficult to turn the handle. The next test was refrigerated pecan halves... Worked great. I will update this review when I chop whole Brazil nuts for my next ice cream.

It's great!
I bought this item to primarily chop up brazil nuts, which are notoriously hard. This is such a wonderful little device, it does a cracking job. I have found it best to process just one nut at a time, there are 2 settings one for coarse chopping, the other for fine chopping, and it all comes apart very easily for washing. The fact that it isn't electrical means that you can control the degree to which the nuts are chopped. I'm very pleased with it. I think it's fantastic.

Needed something for a medium coarse chop, this is perfect
I was looking for something like the one my mom used, acquired in the middle of the last century. It works perfectly and has a higher capacity than the one she had.
