I easily removed the flap. Look at how the flap is attached to the front of the cat door. The flap is not attached to the front cat door by any screws. At the top of the front cat door, you will see a hole on each side. This hole is where the flap is inserted. Just gently pull the flap from the hole on one side and it will come out easily. Sorry for horrible description but very easy to remove. **Q: Can you keep the flap open? My kitties have never used one and I want to keep it open until they are use to it. Or will I have to some how prop it?** A: My kitties had never used one either (they are feral) but I showed the kittens one time and they immediately started using it. Then mama soon followed. I installed another one because this one was so fantastic. I have a sun porch that is off of a bedroom. It has a patio door, so I purchased one that fits a patio door. They come in the sun porch and then into the bedroom (using the one I put in the window) They love it! and now the come and go as they please. Use potty outside! It has to swing both ways to allow coming and going - maybe you could temporarily remove the door until they get used to the little opening? **Q: Will my 17lb cat fit through this door?** A: Yery likely.
