The most expensive film ever made at the time of its release, Waterworld has thrilled audiences through the years with its awe-inspiring action scenes, gargantuan maritime sets and ground-breaking special effects. A definitive post-apocalypse blockbuster, Waterworld stars Kevin Costner (The Untouchables) as The Mariner - a mutant trader, adrift in a dystopian future where Earth is submerged under water and humankind struggles to survive on boats and in ramshackle floating cities. The Mariner becomes embroiled with the Smokers, a gang of pirates who, led by villainous leader Deacon (Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet), are seeking Enola (Tina Majorino, Napoleon Dynamite), a girl with a map to the mythical realm of Dryland tattooed on her back. Famous for both its epic scale and the controversy that swirled around its production, Waterworld is a key cult film of the 1990s, and an essential entry into the subgenre of ecologically-minded blockbusters. Presented here in an exclusive new restoration, in three different cuts, and with a wealth of extra material, this high-water mark of high-concept Hollywood can now be enjoyed as never before. TWO-DISC LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS DISC ONE THE THEATRICAL CUT DISC TWO THE EXTENDED CUTS [LIMTED EDITION EXCLUSIVE] Review: Waterworld - "Waterworld," starring Kevin Costner was a very controversial movie for its day....It was openly criticized in the news media for its production delays and excessive costs, making it one of the most expensive movies made for its time. Costner's portrayal of the mistrustful and irritable lead "mutant" character was very uncharacteristic and highly criticized, too. Audiences were not prepared for this substantial shift to the anti-hero persona for Costner....They were used to viewing him as the proverbial "good guy" hero in most of his past films such as : "The Untouchables"; "Robin Hood" and "Silverado." However, it would not be the last time Costner portrayed the "anti-hero" as he revisited the genre in later films such as: "Wyatt Earp" ; "Tin Cup" and "Message in a Bottle." The film suffered from his anti-hero character portrayal which was often mean and cruel at times, and he was not perceived very sympathetically by audiences at the time. Also, many movie goers of the day thought the scenario of a world wide flood a bit far fetched, too. But, owing to the reality of global warming and the melting of the polar ice caps the past twenty years, the movie seems much more realistic today. Dennis Hopper's portrayal as the film's antagonist is sadistic and madly humorous as are the tongue and check references to the Exxon Valdez and its notorious captain, who caused one of the great ecological disasters of the 20th century, by running aground an oil tanker and spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Puget Sound...The ecological message is quite clear: the Oil and Gas Business is responsible for the trend in global warming. Bottom line: the film was visionary and plays well for today's modern audiences. Even Costner's portrayal of the anti-hero "mutant' resonates well with contemporary audiences...The film is full of clever and innovative set designs and props, too that make the film very entertaining and memorable.... Review: The Ulysses Cut is the only way to watch this movie. - I should address one thing first. If you are buying it for Blu-ray, you'll be very disappointed. It is not sharp and clear like Blu-ray should be. The best description is that it is grainy, though it is not a bad quality. The regular version is a great movie, but I would not say it is better than some other end-of-the-world movies. This movie shows you what we have been missing due to Hollywood's short-sightedness. The Ulysses Cut has you coming away feeling you just watched something great here. It is of the nature of the first time Planet of the Apes came out. It was so great that few people knew what they had before it came out. But isn't that Hollywood's job? To know great movies? Yet, they cut the heck out of them and make a story bare-bones rather than a great story. I no longer like the theatrical release of Water World. The only version I will watch is the Ulysses Cut. I highly recommend this movie.

Waterworld- Beautiful 3-Disc Blu-Ray set from Arrow Video!
Waterworld. One of the key staples from my childhood. I'll start by saying, the transfers for all 3 versions of the film are INCREDIBLE. Video is very clean and crisp without feeling overdone with the restoration. It still feels like watching a film and not just overtly, digital gloss. The audio tracks are also impressive, listen on a nice surround system and it feels like you're right there in the action. The extras: An incredibly in depth, insightful 1hr. 45.min feature-length documentary. "Dances with Waves"- a vintage featurette with behind-the-scenes footage as well as interviews with a lot of the cast and crew. "Global Warnings"- a short doc about environmentally apocalyptic movies. Production and promotional stills gallery. Original TV spots. Theatrical trailers. If 3 different cuts of the film and the hours of extras weren't enough for you, we also get: Double-sided poster with original theatrical poster on one side and the awesome, newly-commissioned artwork on the reverse 6 collectible postcards 60 page perfect-bound book featuring new writings on the film and amazing concept drawings and sketches from the production team All housed inside of a deluxe, hardshell slipcase. Amazon has this listed as a "2 disc" when it is actually a 3 disc set. If you're a fan of this movie, you should own this special edition. Get it while it's still available! And for such a reasonable price! It really is special, it's one of my favorites from Arrow. And that is truly saying a lot. It's nice to see this movie getting the treatment it deserves. This is incredible filmmaking at its finest. It features beautiful imagery and huge, grandiose stunts, all of which were 90% practically done. They don't make them like this anymore. And this set by Arrow Video goes beyond doing the film Justice.

Better than it's given credit for
Waterworld drowned in its own negative pre-release hype, which I along with pretty much everyone else bought into at the time (a similar set of circumstances rightfully crushed Gigli, which is so much worse than this film as to be in its own category). Upon age and reflection, Waterworld stands on its own as a coherent, enjoyable apocalypse film. It simply doesn't look like something that $200+ million was spent on (much of which went into rebuilding set pieces after a storm, so it had no effect on the look of the film). If you can get past whatever expectation that budget might have placed for you in terms of shiny effects, this is a pretty darn good movie. Costner is believable and entertaining as the Mariner, and the supporting cast does a good job. Hopper has fun chewing the scenery as the Deacon, leader of a huge pack of scavengers called Smokers due to the fact their vehicles and industry run off crude oil carried in their massive mobile oil tanker home. Most people bash Waterworld because of either its huge price tag, which didn't "deliver," or because they feel it is simply a rehash of Road Warrior but on the ocean. I believe there are strong counterarguments to both these claims. I love Road Warrior, but I hardly believe it invented the genre; there were films coming out 25 years earlier that had the same theme. An apocalypse film is usually the only way to posit an alternative reality movie without having to bloat up on futuristic robots and/or aliens (the other possibility is a caveman film, which we all know will be a resounding success). Costner's film parallels Road Warrior really only to the extent both involve a lone warrior in a savage post-apocalyptic world, which is how every single other film in the genre is also set up. It basically IS the genre. Waterworld takes its place in that genre quite adeptly. It has plenty of interesting but disposable side villians, neat gadgets and surprises, a cynical central adventurer with lots of deadly skills, and surprisingly good dialogue. Heck even the annoying child actor gets thrown overboard when she becomes too annoying. If only The Phantom Menace writers were taking notes. Likewise, the action in this film proves satisfying, as it is CGI free. Waterworld was a failure at the time, but it has aged well and deserves another look. It's not as good as Road Warrior, no, but what is? I'd take a screening of Waterworld over most of the recent "summer" action films (Hulk, Daredevil, S.W.A.T. etc) of this past summer any day of the week.

most glorified 4k blu ray treatment a movie can get
i bought the original 4k version of this movie back in 2020 and comparing the 2 its night and day. the blu ray quality alone in this 2023 re-release looks better than the 2020 4k version. whats in the new cut, you get 5 more minutes of WATER!! and KEVIN COSTNER if you can handle it! most of the extra time is dedicated to small cuts and details that make you feel more immersed to the world as for the movie why did it fail is 4 basic reasons #1 a natural disaster destroyed the water city set and production was forced to rebuild the set almost doubling the cost of the movie so the movie had an unrealistic expectation to make its money back; it was doomed at the start, they should have built the city on shore and used creative angle shots and models to create the illusion it was filmed in open water. #2 the character was highly unlikable, nothing wrong with having a mean hero but it needs to be balanced with likable qualities as well. example judge dread is cruel, Callous and unfeeling but that is balanced out with his devotion to the law, protecting innocence and his willingness to be tough on crime. #3 the actors ego, like in other movies where the actor thinks he can carry the whole film such as cast away, and i am legend. Without other characters to bounce off of these kinds of movies get boring fast, no movie star is an island. #4 no eye candy in the world. you have to create something appeasing in the world that makes the audience say "i wouldn't mind living in this world" mad max had the car and a no speed limit wasteland, star trek next gen had a ship with carpet, amazing health care and a theme park holo deck, Lord of the rings had the camaraderie of allies, fiercely loyal to each other. the problem with water world is the world is too bleak and theirs nothing to look forward to in the end your body becomes fertilizer

Very good Arrow bluray.
So Waterworld is this unique movie that offers a water set, amazing stunt action scenes and a fair script. Now, of course that the story as flaws but we do not question this type of movies , the ride alone is wirth the price. For the already fans of Waterworld, you will live to see the extended cut, it does add some develepment to the story but e do like the theatrical cut as well, it is super fast pacing. The Arrow bluray is amazing and higly recomended.
