The mechanism is a bit unexpected for me, but easy enough to get used to; if you use a key, make sure the knob is vertical. If you use the locking button to lock, you just press the schlage button, turn the knob and wait for the sound that it has locked. Setting the new code was easy too. Review: Great lock - highly recommend - I replaced my existing Schlage deadbolt with this lock about two weeks ago and I am very pleased with it. First, the installation was very easy due mainly to the fact that the lock is designed to fit in the same hole as an existing deadbolt, so there were no additional holes to drill. I did not change out the striker plate, so that saved a little time, and it looks like the existing bolt would have worked but I changed it with the new one anyway. 2nd, the instructions are well written and easy to follow. 3rd, and most important, it worked perfectly once it was installed. It is a very clever product. I was concerned that the 9v battery would have to provide the current to a motor to retract the bolt and I'd be replacing the battery all the time, but thats not how it works at all. The battery simply causes the thumb turn to engage and light the keyboard, your hand does the work of retracting the bolt. So the battery should last a long long time. There is a manual lock w/keys in case the battery dies. But best of all, I found it very easy to program my own custom code (and erase the codes it came with for better security) and now my family can come and go without needing a key. I can program it with a temporary code if someone will be watching the house while we are on vacation, then delete the code when we return. This is MUCH better than giving keys out to people over the years, then wondering how many people have a keys to your front door. I even showed my 85 year old mother-in-law how to use it (I know, I know: why would I do THAT?), and she has no problems using it. I used the same code numbers as our garage door, so its easy for everyone to remember. It comes with a pair of keys which you use if the battery goes dead, which is possible but should never be an issue because the lock alerts you when the battery gets low. Still, I plan to rekey the cylinder to match the other door keys so we dont have to worry about yet another key. If you don't want to re-key the lock, you can just put one of the keys in a hide-a-key rock somewhere in the yard. Bottom line: Schlage is known for high quality locks, and this device is no exception. If you already have a Schalge deadbolt and your are looking for more convenience and security, then I recommend this lock.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: does this lock have an autolock feature?**
A: You have to turn it manually, which is the main reason I bought this unit.   In my experience, similar units that "auto-lock" are problematic in that the "bolt" may not set correctly if not perfectly lined up.  On our door, we had problems with humidity and the "auto" feature would jam unless you "jiggled" the door.   Also, the "auto" lock units eat up the battery much faster.

**Q: Do the numbers wear on the commonly used keys (for your PIN entry?)   That is, after repeated use, can a person tell which keys are pressed most often?**
A: ...even if one could identify the 4 most commonly used keys, there would still be 256 potential combinations since numbers can be repeated.  I have had one of these for six years, and while the numbers have not worn, the buttons which are pushed most frequently are a bit dirtier than the numbers that never get pushed.  They are not dirty but there is slight discoloration.  However, since my wife and family each have separate codes, 8 out of the 10 buttons get used at some point.  All that said, the keys are still clean and the oft used button are only barely discolored.

**Q: Is the keypad visible in the dark -- from a source other than reflected light?**
A: No, The Keyboard is not visible in the dark. You must touch a key on the pad before the keyboard lights. We press any key an then press the enter key before we enter a code.

**Q: read where rain can "fry" this unit, true???**
A: I have two of these and one of the touchpad deadbolts on different doors. The two like this have been installed about 2 years and the touchpad has been installed about three. One of them (this model) is installed on a shed directly in the elements while the other two have eves above them (very small overhangs). I am currently replacing the one that is directly in the elements while the other two are still functioning perfectly.

The overhangs are small but it is the difference between getting soaked EVERY single time it rains and rarely ever getting directly rained on. So I would say, no, rain doesn’t “fry” this product but, yes, DIRECT exposure to the elements will likely shorten the lifespan of the lock. On the other hand, it doesn’t take much to reduce this problem (like a 12” overhang 8-10’ above the door). Also, the “shortened” lifespan of mine was still about two years. It was better than I expected knowing it was completely unsheltered.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Almost Gave Up

When I ordered my first Keyless Entry Code it was used, so I returned the package and was immediately sent out a replacement on the next business day. I didn’t do the set up the same day until yesterday, which was 2 to 3 days later, however, the key knob kept turning with the key and would did not unlock or lock , and I followed the example to a T and it still did not work. I’ve then proceeded to do a second return, and then I got a message that says “ How can we make this right,” so there were options recommended to contact support, watch a video, and etc) so I chose to watch the video. I decided to uninstall and start over by following the video and it turned out that I indeed had missed a step. After the set-up was completed, and I created my own personal Keyless Entry Code the door would not lock after entering the code, but the code was working. To my surprise, it turned out that when the door tried to lock after entering the code, the lock was hidden against the plate on the side of the door post when you lock your door so now I have to get someone to come in to fix that issue, but other than that if you follow the video, everything will work out fine. I am 100% satisfied with the results that I took the time to watch the video carefully to complete the installation. I’m glad that I did not give up and I kept trying and it was worth the trouble. 👍🏾👍🏾 that Plate was the problem and this was caused after I had my front door replaced years ago with a new door, so the issue was on my end. However, my experience was still amazing to me because I found out what the exact problem was , it was worth watching the video examining on my end to figure out what the exact issue was and why the code did not work after I said the code to lock the door. Try resetting the code again and come to realize and after watching the video a few times more , once you enter your four digit pin number that you create for yourself then you have to turn the knob/the key knob after intern your code to lock the door and then you repeat the same steps when unlocking the door. Thank you customer support for providing the video that helps the guide with the installation.
