Outstanding scanner! But you might need a micro B USB cable...
This is a slick little scanner that works quickly and very well. If you're planning to connect it to your computer via USB you'll need a micro B cable, as it does not include one. Initially I was bummed about this because though I planned to use the scanner with Wifi, when I went to setup the scan-to-network share feature, the scanner's menu informed me I had to set that up from my computer. So I assumed I would have to plug it in and went searching for a cable and for the right software on Brother's web site.Thankfully, you don't actually have to plug it into a computer to set it up and you don't need to download any Brother software either, depending on your use case. You can setup wifi directly from the scanner's touchscreen, then use any web browser from a computer on the same network to access the scanner over Wifi to complete setup of more advanced features without a USB connection. I had to Google the default password for the scanner's web interface (turns out it's printed on a label on the bottom of each scanner), but once I had that I was able to login and configure the various options. Now all I have to do is drop a sheet of paper (or up to 20) directly into the automatic document feeder on the scanner and it automatically performs a duplex scan, skips blank pages, converts it to a PDF and drops it on a network share without pressing a single button.Once it's all setup it is super fast and very easy to use. I highly recommend this. It's worth the extra money to get a true Wifi scanner if you want wireless scanning to network storage.

Learning Curve
Device itself is small and compact, which is AWESOME since I love having desk real estate. Clutter is not my friend, hence the reason for a document scanner that has a feeder.Setup: Extremely easy: plug in, turn on, set date/time, connect to WiFi (I went wireless)Software Install: Install all drives and firmware updatesThe instructions provided: Horrible. Tells you how to plug it in and where the date/time settings are. The rest is up to you!Scanning documents: So this took a little to get used to on the process. Be patient because it's really worth it in the end. Today is day 0, so I haven't setup the process to click an option on the scanner and it sends to to the network or my computer. I went with the trigger from computer.Kind - this allows you to scan Text, Black & White or ColorDPI is up to 600Size - paper size, this has some different settings, but most of my stuff is standard 8.5x11 (letter)Orientation (this is a cool feature)Duplex - I had NO clue what this was, but after testing it scans back and front in one shot. You can pick where to scan it toYou can name your file before you start the scanFormat: Pick from various options; I'm a PDF kind of guy.You can combine the scans to a single documentImage Correction - haven't used, but I have it set on None.Scanning steps (that works for me):Open the app on the computerPlace your documents front facing the feed trayPick your settings on the appClick ScanTo scan new documents CLOSE THE APP!! I made this mistake and it was appending it to the previously scanned document.Which brings to light a COOL feature, say you have 500 documents; clearly you can't fit them all on the feed tray so you break it into batches of 25 (20 batches) but it should be all in one document. Scan your 25 documents, put your new 25 documents in the feed tray and scan. This will APPEND to the file.I originally gave it a 4 star ease of use because it took me some time to really figure out how to use it since the instructions are purely out of the box setup. After my trial and error period, if I could give it 30 stars, I really would. This is the best $200 spent on a portable and compact scanner.Happy Scanning!

Not Everything is in the Box
Just received my Brother ADS-1700W Scanner, but I'll have to wait a few days to get it up and running. If you plan to use it with your computer you'll need a USB 3.0 Micro cable (not included in the package). If you plan to use it standalone and save to a USB stick, I guess you'd be OK as long as you have the USB stick. After reading all the difficulties setting up the WiFi network options (either to your mobile device or the cloud (Google Drive, One Drive, etc.), I've decided to wait for the USB 3.0 Micro cable which should be here in a couple days from Amazon. Next you'll need the manual (not included in the box) which you get from the Brother website after registering your unit. In the manual, it tells you everything you need. You'll also need some consumable supplies if you plan to use it regularly. These include Carrier Sheets (#CS-A3301), $18.99 for a pack of 2 - they don't come in the box, but you'll need them to scan receipts, photos, anything loose-leaf or with holes in it, items written in pencil, docs narrower than 2" or shorter than 2.76", odd shaped (not rectangular paper), wrinkled, or curled. Carrier sheets need to be replaced after every 500 uses. Then every 10K scans you'll need a new Separation Pad (SP-200C), $19.99 each. And finally, you'll need to replace the Pickup Roller ($23.99) after every 100K scans. For $270, I would have thought they could have given us one spare each in the box. But it's all on order now from Brother's online store. The Brother website is challenging, so the best way to find these items to buy is to Google them for the link to the Brother store. Then make sure you've logged into your Brother account before trying to checkout because the website hangs otherwise. I'm still looking forward to getting all my scanning done with this handy new tool, but I'm not quite there yet. Once I get it up, I'll check back with a review of how it works... Update: Now it's up and running. I had two issues, one is solved the other is not. First, the destination folder for the scans is by default set for your computer's "Documents" folder. I was able to change this to my desired destination using the "Remote Setup" functions accessed through the Brother Utilities application. The second issue is I wanted change the file name of the scans. I've had maybe a dozen scanners in my life (I'm 72), and I never had one that wouldn't let you set the filename of the scan so it would increment e.g., "Scan 001, Scan 002, Scan 003... " Not this one. It names each scan with the serial number of your scanner, todays date, and a crazy unsequential number. Using another Brother application "iPrint& Scan" you can manually set the file names of each scan, but it won't increment. Using Remote Setup again to try and configure my Scan File Names, I was able to change the start of the name from the Serial Number to "Scan" but I can't remove the date, and the counter increments are quite strange - e.g., Scan2022-09-05_093306, Scan2022-09-05_093430, Scan2022-09-05_093500, Scan2022-09-05_093543, Scan2022-09-05_094035, etc. I wrote to Brother support, and the answer was basically, "those are the available options." I suggested they offer something more user-friendly in a future update, so there you go. I may try to find other scanner software that it easier to use, but for now I need to get scanning and will just have to live with this issue for now. On the positive - the scanner is fast and easy to feed. My only design complaint is there is no extendable tray to catch the scans as they come out - so just be prepared for that or you could (like I'm doing) use a flat box lid taped to the bottom of the scanner to catch your scans. Other than that - everything works... Late breaking update: When the Carrier Sheets arrived from Brother, I attempted to scan a smaller item using the sheet, but kept getting a "Paper Jam" error on the machine, and the scan on the computer only showed the top inch of the Carrier Sheet. I contacted Brother via chat just now and here is the response, "Patt: Thanks for holding. I apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, it is listed that the machine does not include a Carrier Sheet for scanning small or irregular documents. Previous machine's carrier sheets will not work and are not supported for use with this machine. It seems that you should only scan documents that are within the machine's paper handling specifications to avoid document jams." In the manual there is a section on "Acceptable documents for scanning" and that is the list of the only items this scanner will accept. I took my item (3.5"x8.5") out of the carrier sheet and ran it through the scanner, adjusting the guides to handle the smaller width and it scanned fine. Just thought I'd pass this on.

Swift, Accurate, and User-Friendly: A Must-Have for Professionals On-The-Go!
I purchased the Brother Wireless Document Scanner, ADS-1700W, for my home office and it's proven to be an invaluable asset. Right from the unboxing, the setup was intuitive and straightforward, making it operational within minutes. The scanner boasts fast scan speeds which are crucial when dealing with a heap of documents. The wireless feature is a major plus, allowing me to scan documents directly to my mobile device or cloud storage, making it ideal for on-the-go professionals. The quality of scans is impressive with clear, sharp images and text.I appreciate the touchscreen LCD which simplifies the operation, and the automatic document feeder which can handle 20 pages is a time-saver. The compact design of the scanner is a space-saver, yet it does not compromise on the functionality.I also found the dual paper trays and duplex printing features quite useful for different scanning needs. The scanner has a variety of connectivity options which is great for a modern workspace. The only downside I experienced was the initial connectivity setup with my network, but once that was resolved, it's been smooth sailing. The Brother ADS-1700W is a reliable, efficient, and user-friendly scanner that meets the demands of a busy professional. The price is reasonable considering the features and the brand reputation. I would highly recommend this scanner to anyone in need of a high-quality, convenient scanning solution.

OK machine, way subpar software
This machine is ok. I've been using it for over a year. It's fast when scanning 300dpi and handles slightly bent or creased paper well without jamming. The software is terrible. It is bloated and convoluted. It consumes over 1GB of storage. While storage isn't scarce these days, that's a lot of resources for an application that scans documents. I have not been able to get the "scan to PC" to work on multiple Windows machines. The driver installation is either flaky or broken causing the software not to work as designed. There is no scanning capabilities from the web console, one must use the Brother iPrint&Scan software. While the TWAIN drivers do exist, they don't work very well with Adobe Acrobat Pro (that is installed with Creative Cloud), notably no two-sided scanning. The sheet feeder often allows the page(s) to skew, so all of my scans are angled. I had to rig up something to align the pages so this would be reduced. Some downsides with the machine are no Wi-Fi 5GHz, it only supports 2.4GHz WPA2. It won't connected to SMB v3 network shares, so I have to downgrade my network storage devices to support version 1 or 2, exposing my network to known vulnerabilities with these older SMB versions. There is no paper tray to catch output sheets, I had to build something to keep papers from flying out of the machine onto the floor. Sometimes the feeder mechanism allows pages to become misaligned and skewed.Occasionally, the software completely loses track of the scanner. I can reach the IP, but the software can't.I'm ready to toss this scanner. I would not recommend it to anyone. The painful software, the paper feeder system, and lack of output tray is why.

What a delight after setup
I had a devil of a time setting up this scanner. It offers about six ways to control the scanner. For two reasons, I wanted was to scan to a shared folder on the local area network: so, all of our computers could make use of the scanner, and we could operate the scanner while sitting down with it, as it resides in a separate room with other network equipment. So, I wanted to sit down at the scanner, ask it to scan, see that it did so successfully, and then walk to the computer in another room to access the produced pdf file. We use Apple computers and the difficulty in setting up the scanner had to do with setting up a separate, limited account for the scanner, opening up the firewall just enough to let the scanner in, ownership, and file permissions, and more. Particularly difficult was figuring out the correct path name that the scanner would use to find the shared folder. After much searching, I found an example that immediately led to the solution. It took me two days and about 12 hours to get it working. It would have been faster if Brother's documentation or help site showed an example of the folder path for my circumstance. After setup, it has been a beauty. I have used it for a week, and I wonder how I ever got along without a document scanner. It is fast, it is small, and it produces high quality PDF files. If it shows the reliability that my Brother printer and old phone fax machine have demonstrated, I will be very happy.

FANTASTIC Brother Mobile Scanner
This is my second Brother Scanner that I have bought, one is in Australia and this one follows me around NZ. I have to say it was so easy to setup with my frequently used email addresses. I am NOT tech savvy but I had it up and running within 15 minutes of unpacking it. It scans up to 13 or 14 sheets for me, although the manual says 20 sheets. When its not in use it is very easy to pack up and store away until I need it again. I have bought the little carry case for my NZ scanner which is well worth the cost. Overall, I am extremely happy and impressed with how well this little scanner works. It does not take a big footprint off my desk top, its not heavy and it doesnt WASTE any of my time trying to use it. So overall I give it a AAAA++++++++ rating as I rely on the use of scanners every day of my week with my work.

Fairly good if you know how to set it up
I've owned this scanner for nearly 18 months, not a heavy user.It has always worked well on USB. Sometimes it has struggled to send files over email (cannot say it is 100% on the scanner or the email service connectivity/size) or to PC via WiFi. The scanner or the Brother software on the computer won't tell much about error details at that level.Configuring it to scan over network to your computer, creating shortcuts on the device screen, could benefit from being better. You need to configure most of the things for this device via the computer app, very few options to configure directly on the scanner screen.I've managed to make it work for USB, to PC (over wireless), to a Server Network Drive, Email and FTP. It was necessary to adjust brightness and contrast levels, as well sensitivity for skipping blank pages in some cases. For cards and/or smaller papers, I've had many times the "auto adjust" features actually cutting off edges with actual content to be scanned. Painfully/annoyingly, after trying feeding the paper with different positions, passing a few other documents and coming back, it worked. For the few times I tried a card and had this problem, I just went to my old multifunctional printer with scanner. It came with a very short USB cable, so if you are not planning to have it sitting right next to your PC/laptop, you may need to buy a longer cable/extension USB cord.Pos- small/portable- different scan transmission mode options- good quality image- fairly good auto adjustment features, including skipping blank pages- good speed scanning and transmitting files.- decent range of options to adjust quality and mode of operation (one or two side, continuous scan into one or separate files, pdf or jpeg, etc)- reliable when you get the configuration right, specially via USB connection to the PC.- good adf (auto detection of feed) sensitivity.- ok display (fair for its size and portability)Cons- overall instructions on how to get things done are poor/hard to find- not so intuitive configuration apps and screens for the pc- firmware upgrade with the Brother utility is impossible. They made available another software to download from the firmware upgrade section of the site, though- I only tried their support once as the scanner was skipping all pages on the FTP and server folder options. I ended up fixing the issue myself as the level 2 defaulted to blame on hardware rather than troubleshoot.- connectivity to cloud solutions (e.g. Google Drove) is just via the PC app.- very short USB cable providedTo sum up: if you need a plug and play device, or if you struggle installing software, configuring settings, etc, don't go for this one.If you have some experience and patience to figure out configuration details, or has somebody who can help you, this may work for you.If you need to print mostly documents on standard sizes like letter sized paper, this may work well and fast.If you need it mostly for smaller and fragile papers (e.g. receipts), this will work most of the time, and when it doesn't you may need patience and creativity to try different positions and potentially settings to make it work better.I have yet to put it to use the original way I intended (during travels), with dozens or hundreds of copies of different types of documents at a time. My experience is based on one or few copies at a time, small batches of paper (less than 30 pages).I would give it four stars if configuration was less cumbersome or would not require PC as much, and five stars if it also included option to scan to cloud services without a PC.
