In a companion volume to his award-winning adaptation of The Odyssey, the incomparable graphic novelist Gareth Hinds masterfully adapts Homer’s classic wartime epic. More than three thousand years ago, two armies faced each other in an epic battle that rewrote history and came to be known as the Trojan War. The Iliad, Homer's legendary account of this nine-year ordeal, is considered the greatest war story of all time and one of the most important works of Western literature. In this stunning graphic novel adaptation — a thoroughly researched and artfully rendered masterwork — renowned illustrator Gareth Hinds captures all the grim glory of Homer's epic. Dynamic illustrations take readers directly to the plains of Troy, into the battle itself, and lay bare the complex emotions of the men, women, and gods whose struggles fueled the war and determined its outcome. This companion volume to Hinds’s award-winning adaptation of The Odyssey features notes, maps, a cast of characters, and other tools to help readers understand all the action and drama of Homer's epic. Review: Inspirational and 100% recommend - Amazing book. It is inspirational and at one time or another should be read by all kids. The graphics are detailed but just enough so it isn't at all gory. The helpful notes and "dumb- downed" language makes it easy to follow and read. Review: Highly Recommend - I really enjoyed reading these graphic novels for The Iliad and The Odyssey. I've always been interested in reading the original books but found their size and language intimidating. The graphic novels did a great job of telling the story in a digestible way that aids those who aren't avid readers. They make me want to read more.

Great for reading to kids!
Great illustrations. I read Homers Odyssey and Iliad in highschool but it was not a story I could explain in great detail after. I bought this to read to my kids and they LOVE it. We all understand the story line very well and the illustrations are great. Characters illustrations are consistent so it’s easy to follow along. Not too advanced for my 5 & 6 year old to understand with some added explanation here and there.

My 8-year-old is obsessed — best way to get kids into Greek mythology
Picked this up on a whim and it turned out to be one of the best book purchases I've made. My son devoured it and has already read it multiple times, which for an 8-year-old with Homer's Iliad is something I genuinely didn't see coming. The graphic novel format makes the story completely accessible without dumbing it down. The artwork carries the epic scale of the battles and the drama between characters in a way that prose alone wouldn't land for kids this age. Achilles, Hector, the siege of Troy — it all hits the way it's supposed to, and my son now talks about these characters like they're personal favorites. What I appreciate most is that it respects the source material. This isn't a watered-down retelling — the emotions, the tragedy, the stakes all come through. It's just delivered in a format that actually works for young readers. If you have a kid who's into adventure, battles, or mythology, this is a no-brainer starting point. And if they end up loving it as much as my son did, it's a natural bridge to the real thing down the road.

Great book. Cover arrived quite bent. Should have been shipped in a box, not an envelope.

Perfect intro to a classic!
My 11-yo daughter didn’t like this one quite as much as the Odyssey because it is more about war, but she enjoys it, too. The pictures aren’t cartoonish and she LOVES The who’s who at the beginning (see pic). Another great intro to a great classic!

Art and history!
A great combo of story and art. If you’re looking for total accuracy, this might not be it. But it’s entertaining anyways!! Great for high school students who need a break from just reading

Beautifully done, superb for the right audience
Superbly well done and very giftable for the right audience. It's not as entertaining as the Odyssey but if you're into Greek mythology enough to be interested in the Iliad, this graphic novel won't disappoint!

An excellent graphic novel for all ages
This graphic novel is an excellent introduction for all readers, adults and children alike, to classical literature. Gareth Hinds' adaptation of Homer's 'The Iliad' is thorough but does not overcomplicate the story for young readers. Another review criticized Hinds' work as being "word heavy", but although there is indeed alot of writing on most pages, the words compliment the illustrations, they do not detract from them. The drawings and the prose fit together like a hand in a glove. It is great value for money at approximately 250 fully illustrated pages, with the illustrations capturing the drama of the story very accurately. It takes great skill to retell the story for it to be both engaging for younger readers but detailed enough for teens or adults to enjoy. Overall, I highly recommend this graphic novel as Hinds' has made both 'The Iliad', and his other adaptation of Homer's work, 'The Odyssey', very accessible to a wide range of reading abilities.
