SO... what the bleep is it made of ?

its made if roughly 1/8th" steal plate....pretty heavy stuff. very, very sturdy. fold up flat but the whole thing is probably 3 Lbs.

Has the fabrication quality improved (some of the reviews mention rough edges and poor fit)?

Quality of fit was good for me. But yes as with stamped metal edges will be sharp. A sanding flap wheel will fix this if it bothers you
