Miyasaka brewery Co., Ltd. Was founded in 1662. It all began with Ihei Arimasa miyasaka, the 12th head of the miyasaka family, who started a brewery at the city of Kamisuwa, Nagano, Japan. **Q: The california lead and cadmium warning is a bit concerning - the most common alternative, kikkoman's miso doesnt have it. Any idea on the actual LD%?**
A: The warning is because seaweed harvested in Japan has higher levels of lead and cadmium than seaweed from other areas of the world so they are required to include that information on the label according to California's prop 65. It's not enough of a percentage to be concerning and it's not even mentioned on most Japanese food not intended to be sold in the U.S.

**Q: Are these vegetarian?**
A: They list bonito (dry fish flakes) as an ingredient, so I'd say no, not vegetarian. Most miso soups use bonito.

**Q: where is this made?**
A: Made in Japan. The box had been made in China.  Some Chinese made products have been critiscized, but the majority of what they produce is acceptable.

**Q: Why is there a strange bitter taste to these?**
A: Some miso soups can taste funny. These didn't taste to bitter to me but I do feel like I have has better quality brands and miso soups before.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good, but could be better

At just over $1 each these are okay value for the money. As they are individually wrapped, these are easy to store and even easier to make - all you need is hot water something to stir it with. The soup taste is pretty good, honestly comparable to the miso soups that you'd order from a Japanese restaurant. In the addition to the soup you'll also find soft tofu, fried tofu (they call it fried bean curd), seaweed and green onion. However, only the seaweed and fried bean tofu pieces are satisfactory. The soft tofu is extremely salty - they must have soaked up all the salt from the freeze drying process, but it literally tastes like you are eating pure salt cubes. The green onion is not edible. The pieces are extremely tough and fibrous and I eat around them. Overall it's not bad, but I've had better freeze dried miso soups from our local Asian store here. If this is your first time buying freeze dried miso soup I would try from another vendor or something from your local store before ordering again.
