You can apply the foam in the gap, and like others said be careful about overfilling because it does expand quite a lot. I also highly recommend buying our Cleaner / Amazon # B0002YWRG4 because you can spray this on a paper towel and clean up foam when it's still wet. It's a useful product for any project using GREAT STUFF foams. Don't worry if it puffs out too much, you can cut, sand, caulk or paint this foam once fully cured/dry. The foam will not crack if you nail through it but it also is not structural so you'll need to make sure you're nailing the molding into the wall. The stuff before it cures is full of flammable gas but it doesn't say anything about keeping the cured material from heat. Now, that being said, (I'm putting on my professional chemist hat) Great Stuff is a polyurethane. And polyurethanes are flammable. So, I would be concerned if the area got very hot, say over 150F.
