Well designed 2.5” deck screws, coating description is ambiguous
This big box of 400 #10 deck screws of 2.5” length arrived in a nice plastic box with a lid that hinges open, but unfortunately the bottom of the box was cracked badly during shipment and will need repair with tape. The description also says five pounds, but I did not weigh them yet. When using screws in treated lumber, the coating type is paramount, because the chemicals in treated deck boards and lumber will quickly react with metals, causing screws to corrode and weaken to the point of loosening or breaking. Having disassembled structures made of treated lumber by removing screws, I’ve seen different levels of screw deterioration in various coated and uncoated screws. This is why I’m puzzled why the manufacturer did not give a clear unambiguous description of the coating of these screws. “Golden Climate Coating” foes not inform or guarantee confidence. In the details under “exterior” it says “epoxy”. The material is listed as “alloy steel”. The description also says they are corrosion resistant and can be used with pressure treated wood. With a product like this, you would think that they would know that serious users would demand to know what kind of coating is used so they can have confidence that the screws won’t deteriorate and need to be replaced. These screws have several features that are useful for attaching deck boards to joists. The head type they describe as flat with star/torx bit and “bugle” shape, with under head cutting teeth, which gives a cleaner countersink. Everything in that description is correct. Immediately under the head is a short unthreaded section, followed by a different type of thread sometimes called milling ribs or reverse thread counter bore. Many deck screws are missing that feature. Apparently the purpose of those different threads is to clean debris out of the hole, reduce splitting, lower the torque, save battery charge, and assist in pulling the two pieces of lumber tightly together at the end. For some materials like vinyl boards, it might prevent mushrooming near the screw head. The rest of the screw has standard thread, which is serrated towards the tip. The serrations cut through the wood rather than displace the wood fibers to the side. This reduces torque and lessens the chance of splitting, possibly aids in chip removal, and negates the need for any pre-drilling. Included with the screws is a T25 bit. These screws arrived in mid winter, so I won’t have any opportunity to use them for a few months, but from everything I’ve seen, they are top quality, assuming that the mysterious “golden climate coating” actually does a good job of preventing corrosion in treated lumber. If so, they should prove durable with great longevity, and the box of 400 should last a long time for me.

Excellent decking screws
I found these #9 2 1/2-inch wood screws to be high quality and very effective fasteners. They check all the boxes. They are ACQ-safe and self-starting, with a non-slipping T25 drive that provides solid engagement. What sets these apart, though, is the combination of features built into a single screw. Just past the tip, there is a deep serrated cutter. Once the screw is started and aligned for the first couple of threads, the serrations and notch engage and drill aggressively into the wood. The first inch and a half of thread pulls the decking board tightly onto the joist. A set of cutting threads clears the bore hole so the head seats cleanly into the board without splitting. Then, to keep that head secure, it has its own cutting teeth that countersink smoothly and help resist movement during freeze and thaw cycles. I really like the color on these screws. They have a bronze-gold hue that blends well with both fresh and weathered lumber, unlike many others that lean green or yellow. The coating does not appear to be simple paint. It seems bonded to the metal, and I experienced no flaking or chipping while driving them. I used a fresh bit, and the package conveniently includes a 2-inch T25 bit, which encourages proper installation. Overall, these are excellent decking screws. I experienced no breakage, stripping, or chipped finish when installing them in pine boards. They are available in a 5-pound box containing 490 screws, which feels economical for the quality provided.

Nice screws in a decent box.
These #10 x 2-1/2" multi purpose wood deck screws have worked quite well on the project I have used them on so far. I'm not building a deck, Im making shelves for my basement, but these screws are definitely a good choice. They are very easy to use. The torx drive heads don't slip or strip out, the heads sit nice and flush after tightening, the segment of reverse threads holds everything in place.... these really check all of the right boxes! At $30 for a 5lb box, they are priced similar to what I can get from the big box store so they are a good value when you consider these arrive right at your house. The plastic box these come in is fairly heavy duty and feels durable. The best part is that if you order multiples of these, the boxes stack nicely unlike the cardboard boxes that always end up falling apart. This box also has a carrying handle on it, but it does not balance well (particularly as the box gets less full), so I don't see much use for the handle... but it's there if you want it. Overall, I am quite satisfied with these and woukd definitely order again!

Thank you for reading my review and looking at my photos of this product. I hope you found it helpful! REVIEW PHILOSOPHY: I only review a product if it is something I am capable of critically evaluating through comparison, testing and use. This means I have experience of using similar items; or that I have equipment or tools that I can test it with; or that I have an upcoming need so I can actually use. I am as selective about getting an item to review as I would be about purchasing that same item, so yes, I expect it to be a good product. My reviews are NOT based on packaging or if it was delivered timely.
