Yes, you add some type of liquid. I use juices most times. Some use milks, waters. Usually just a cup. I love this little machine. I know I'm getting the recommended fruits and veggies. And I add things like chick peas, or flax seed, sometimes a couple tables spoons of olive oil etc. it's amazing how good they can taste
