You've heard about the guys wearing fire hats in the studio and after recording the file segment, fires erupting through the area convincing drug-impaired Brian Wilson to believe his music was the cause and that he tried to burn the tapes. You have heard the majesty of Good Vibrations as it was released. It was the most talked about unreleased album ever recorded andSo knowing all that, Smile must be a freaking masterpiece, right? Uh, not so much.After over 40 years and a number of bootleg assemblies, the much-talked about tapes have been officially sequenced and released as a product. There's no doubt that technology helped those working on it to assembe the many takes and fragments to create a cohesive offering and produce what could have been the Smile album had Brian completed the work back in the 1960s. It's clearly a labor of love..Make no mistake, the stuff here is interesting...but mostly to a Beach Boys fan. In fact, it's the ultimate Fanboy (and Fangirl) collection of vocal performances that do reveal Brian as a genius in sound. The five CDs offer amazing insights into the making of the aforementioned Good Vibrations and the follow-up Heroes & Villains through just a small selection of the studio sessions out-takes.But as an album? As a repeat-listenable collection to someone other than a long-term fan or Brian Wilson follower? I think it's more of a one-time-listen curiosity for the average person.The packaging in this collection is geared directly to fans. Lots of individual pieces and attention to details like making the disc labels look like reference discs for the various studios used is nifty. Unreleased vinyl singles with picture sleeves are exciting. It's fun to hold and fun to look at, as well.
