The sodium ascorbate is not too strong of a flavor (if you get a lot of it in not enough water it just tastes a little salty, but not terrible). Other varieties of C are really sour, even at lower doses, and they can be hard on your stomach. We put this in our kids' apple juice and they don't notice (4 and 6 year olds). Also, we take high doses ourselves whenever we feel a cold or other sickness coming on, or even if we're exposed to a possible germy situation. A high dose for me is maybe 8,000 mg, but you'd want to work up to that to make sure your system is alright with it first. It'll depend on your size and how sick you are (if I was healthy I wouldn't be able to take such a high dose at once). Then to keep the C up we'll take 1,000 to 2,000 mg every couple hours. It really does help to keep us healthy! Our kids obviously get smaller doses than that as well.
