## Description

Hobby or entry-level machinists will not want to pass up this versatile machine. Features a 16-1/2" swing over bed, 11-1/2" swing over saddle, 19-3/16" distance between centers, 3/4" spindle bore and MT #3 tapers.

Review: Gear questions - I have this combo unit and it works well for my hobbies. About the gearing. The gears you can see are metal. The gearing inside the unit for the mill are metal with plastic or acetal teeth. I accidentally crashed mine and had to replace one of the internal gears. Not an easy task
Review: I'm Really Enjoying This Machine! - This is heavy! It came in at over 500 lbs fully assembled and packages exceptionally well. I rent an engine hoist to get it up on the workbench. I'm "serious hobbyist" and so far I'm amazed with this machine and the accuracy. I don't see any plastic gears, so maybe that's changed. All of the gears for cutting threads are indeed metal. My only nit is that some little cover plate popped off when I operated disengaged the bed from the feed screw. But the cover isn't functional so I don't really care. I'm using 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" cutting tools in the lathe -- I just shimmed them up with some 1/4" and 1/8" shims to center them. Bottom line --- I'm having a lot of fun making stuff with this machine and it sure seems sturdy to me. Enjoy! NOTE: I also cut a Jacob's Taper #33 (for a Morse Taper #3 shaft I have) and that worked out really well --- I'm making my own live center.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What is the max diameter that can be turned on this unit?**
A: In theory you could chuck up a work piece that is slightly under 16.5" in diameter. The specs list this as "Swing over bed". However, if you did that, you wouldn't be able to easily move your cutter to the outer edge for turning. The specs also state the "Swing over Saddle" as 11.5", but the Cross Slide and the Compound Slide need room to move into position. Plus the Turret Tool Post must have the cutter held out a small distance from its face. From a practical point of view, I would estimate that you could probably turn a 6" diameter work piece. However, a clever machinist could certainly build themselves a tool holder that would extend the cutter out further away from the current limitations. Such an extension would need to be very heavy and solid to avoid chatter and maintain accuracy. I would also like to say that I love my Shop Fox M1018 and hope to spend more time with it now that I'm retired.

**Q: Plastic gears or all metal gears?**
A: Yes it is metal i you have to change oil after first 10 mins of operation. To breakin gears.

**Q: dose this have auto feed**
A: Automatic feed on the lead screw for cutting threads, machining and turning but not the cross slide.

**Q: is it possible to get in 220-230 Volts (50Hz-60Hz)? is this for metal work?**
A: To answer your question this is not a wood lathe.

### ⭐ F.P.O.S !
*by B***O on May 4, 2016*

The thing will break in under 30HRS of use , its descriptive status F.P.O.S ! THEY MAY BETTER SELL THEM OFF AS BOAT ANCHORS ! and even then it will neither make the grade :( !!!! I dont know of a single lathe manufacturer that had not gone broke when attempting to sell a lathe with plastic gears ! remember "Unimat" , gears must be hardened steel and overall design must be made to last , not to break working in a few accumulative hours of work ! END
