You are correct, they do not scoot around the room. They do contain batteries (2 tiny button cells) that power the squeaking sound. My 2 eight month old cats went bonkers over this toy! The squeaker on the first one only lasted 2 days before it quit (pretty disappointing given the price) but they didn’t seem to mind and played with it till they ripped it open and the electronic innards fell out… which is how I know there are batteries in it. The squeaker is a small 1/2” diameter plastic disc which is very securely made (it took a screwdriver to open it) before I threw it in the trash. I have no fear they could ever open it to get out the batteries. I just gave them the second one and we will see how long that squeaker lasts… **Q: are batteries included?** A: Yes. And they are not meant to be replaceable, because being replaceable usually means there would be a chance of it falling out of the toy and the cat could eat it. But for me the battery lasted pretty long anyway, you’ll notice when the battery is wearing out when the squeak sound becomes weird. The plastic tab is meant to isolate the battery from draining before a mouse is in use, so only remove right before giving it to the cat. **Q: Does this toy come WITHOUT catnip???** A: The toy I ordered does have catnip. **Q: Can the squeaker be replaced?** A: It is not made to be replaced. There is no compartment that holds the squeaker. If you could even find a squeaking mechanism you would have to open the toy and insert it yourself.
