am i only allowed to use one controller with this?

For individual players with their individual controller you need individual dongles for example:
4 users, 4 players on the switch, 4 controllers, 4 dongles, work, you will need a usb hub to connect the 4 dongles
there are some hub docs that come with 4 usb's.

However if you want to have shared control over one player then use one dongle for all the controllers. for example:
4 users, 1 player on the switch, 4 controllers, 1 dongle. 
For this you won't need a hub, and may be fun to assign people to work certain buttons, or may be madness.

Question 2

Is there any problems syncing contollers back to original console, does using this wipe out their firmware?

Accepted Answer

No, the controller syncs with the adapter. just re-sync your controller with the console.

If you're on ps4 it's share+[PS] button to wireless sync or plug controller into console with micro usb cable. leave plugged in for 5-10 seconds and you're paired, just unplug controller.
If you're on Xbox, with console on press pair on controller then press pair button on console.
if you're on switch use touch screen then go to "controllers" then "change grip and order" then press pair button on controller.

Question 3

Is there any major lag?

For most modern 3D games designed for HD tvs, you won't notice any lag at all (Zelda BofW, Mario Odyssey).  However, play something that requires incredible precision, like MegaMan 11 (which seems to require the sharp timing of the older CRT-intended games), and you will notice enough lag to get you killed when using a wireless controller.  For this game specifically, I used a wired controller with this adapter and the difference is noticeable.

Question 4

Does this keep the analog sticks working properly, or does it function as a D pad?

For JoyCons with the Switch, the analog sticks work as a d-pad on both sticks.
