Enjoyable!
I honestly don't understand the negative reviews of this game. Although it can be frustrating at times, I found this to be worlds better than the Mario Tennis for the Wii U. 1.) Adventure Mode - This is the "story mode" which you can progress through to unlock courts. It's amusing, and definitely helped me practice my Mario Tennis skills. Whenever I would get stuck on a certain challenge, I had the option to go between different modes so I was never bored. 2.) Tournament Mode (Online vs. COM) - The COM tournament was exactly what I was looking for, and what I missed from Mario Tennis for the Wii U. I enjoyed progressing through the COM tournament. The online tournament's match-making is broken, but still fun to work through if you are stuck in another area of the game. 3.) Free Play - This is pretty much what is expected from a semi-party game. I've played the online free play with friends and locally with my husband, and it seemed to work just fine (aside from the online play being a little confusing to navigate). There are new mechanics to get the hang of, but with a lot of practice and improving your reaction time, it's definitely a fun game. I am not sure what others expected from a Mario Tennis game aside from what they provided. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this for any Mario Tennis enthusiast. I grew up with Mario Tennis for the N64 and it definitely lives up to that.

Best game in the series
This is easily the best Mario Tennis game in the series. The Adventure mode is a welcome addition (although limited) and I recommend all new players play the Adventure mode prior to heading into the Online Tournament because the Adventure mode teaches the player how to execute the new moves/gameplay additions. The Online Tournament is truly where this game shines and it was encouraging to see Nintendo add additional characters each month post-release to give players something to look forward to. The only negative I have is that there are 4 characters that are incredibly cheap and overpowered compared to the rest (I'm looking at you Chain Chomp, Piranha Plant, Boo, Waluigi). I wish there was a way to avoid having to play against these characters in Online Play and play against characters that actually require more skill. Even if they nerfed these characters like they did with Bowser Jr., it would be much appreciated so players can go head-to-head on a more equal playing field. Ultimately though, I really enjoyed my time with this game and would definitely purchase a sequel if Nintendo were to release one. This game is a solid foundation for the series & hopefully Nintendo builds upon this with a future Mario Tennis release.

Fun Mario Tennis Game: More Skill, Less Luck/Gimmicks
Best Mario Tennis hands down in the entire series in terms of gameplay; and way better than the horrible Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash on the WiiU. There are 15+ Playable Characters making it the largest roster in any Mario Tennis game. ---Gameplay. A lot of strategy compared to previous games as you have to pay attention to your meter, positioning, and decided whether to use your specials. A lot of risk/reward when deciding what moves to do in real time. This game will test your twitch reflexes with very exhilarating with split second decisions when matched up with someone of the same skill level There are of course basic Shots: Flat, Top Spin, Slice, Lob But this game uses a meter system or energy gauge which you have to keep track of as you can use Zone Shots, Zone Speed, or Special Shot for offensive and defensive maneuvers. Your meter builds up as you continuously rally with your opponent -Zone Shot. Aim a target reticle at specific area of map or at opponent themselves Racket take damage if enemy do direct damage via zone shot. If hit 3x in a match, you get KOed giving your opponent the point But if you block/parry with perfect timing; your racket takes no damage -Zone Speed. when activated puts you in slow motion or bullet time. -Special Shot. You can save up your meter till it's full to initiate special shot. This can destroy enemy racket in one hit (instead of 3 like in zone shot), but again, if timed correctly your opponent can block it. -Trick shot. Makes you leap/dash to one side of the court while also helping you build meter faster than normal shots. Charge shots also build up meter, but not as fast. -Court Hazards. There are also court hazards such as teleport portal mirrors, random bombs on court, and piranha plants on net to name a few. You can also toggle this off if you want. -Simple Rules. You can turn off all abilities and play a simple game of tennis with just basic shots, and no racket durability... but it's not as fun in my opinion. -Swing Mode. You can use full motion controls like Wii Sports Tennis if you like, but it's not as efficient/effective as traditional controls. Great for casual play among friends and family, or if you want to work up a sweat/get off the couch. --Online Multiplayer Unlike Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash you can play with your friends online. There are events and online tournaments you can participate in. Match making in a tournament is dependent on on your online rank, and internet latency for regular matches. Online tournament are timed events like Splatoons Splatfest or Salmon Run You also get costumes and characters via participation bonus --Story Mode/ Single Player Basically a glorified tutorial. Gives you fun mini-games, and scenarios/objectives to play through especially with the boss battles. Plot is very simple like most Mario games: Wario and Waluigi finds an ancient tennis racket which turns the holder of that racket evil. Luigi, being the curious guy he is, touches it and it's a mad dash to get 5 stones to reverse the curse. The replay value is low after you've completed the single player campaign as this is is very multiplayer (local and online) focused There's also tournament mode which is what you expect going through a gauntlet of CPU opponents for unlockables and in-game trophies Overall, fun arcade tennis game that'll test your twitch reflexes, and snap decision making. This game is very multiplayer-centric. If you're in it for the single player, it worth a rental for the creative levels

Best Sports Game of 2018
I've played Madden, 2K, The Show, Fifa, and this and this is one of the very few times I think the Nintendo game has dominated the pack (the only other example I can think of is Strikers for Gamecube and MAYBE Super Sluggers on Wii). The controls are simple enough to get right away, but complex enough to take time to master, sort of like a good fighting game. There are enough levels and modes to give the game plenty of variety, but the regular game is fun enough that big fans won't even need other features. It's probably the most satisfying online experience the good Nintendo games have to offer, simply because it's exactly what I want out of online tennis. The ability to play against a friend or to enter tournaments against strangers. This is a must own game for the Switch, IMO, and is great fun with two players. I'm buying it for my cousin for Christmas.

Street Tennis Fighter
Don't play this game alone! It is the ultimate multiplayer game to play with friends. With so much depth and skill required, this tennis game feels more like a fighting game. Sure it has everything that is found in every other tennis game but it is the cartoony elements that separate it from other tennis games. Players can counter other people's shots with other shots. If you are out of position and can't return a shot, you can try a trick shot which will have your character careening across the screen. Imagine Walugi moonwalking across the court to return and out of reach shot. As you are volleying shots back and forth, you build up a super meter. If you fill it up all the way, you can unload a special shot on your opponent that can break their racket. You can either win a round by outscoring your opponent or by breaking their racket. Once you master the mechanics, matches can get pretty tense. Nintendo has served up another ace.

Sat On The Shelf Until I Discovered It
I preordered this game and it came. I played it for about 10 minutes when I got it but got quite bored tbh. I tried a go at the I line tournament and was swiftly beaten. I put the game in the case and put it away. 6 months later I decided to give it another go and played for 4 hours today. Once I got past the temple in the adventure story I quickly got the hang of the game. However, the real fun come in the o line tournament. Trying to win the matched is addicting! It’s tough!! This is the winning part of the game. A very fun multiplayer game and I strongly recommend buying this game. It is a different style of multiplayer than what we are used to. Just good clean competitive fun.
