## Description

Micro-Mesh is a unique cushioned abrasive capable of giving very fine & very controlled scratch patterns. The grits range from 1500 to 12000. The 1500 is slightly more coarse than a conventional 600 grit sandpaper & the 12000 will leave scratch patterns that cannot be detected by the human eye. Micro-Mesh abrasives can polish to an optically clear, reflective state or through the use of a more coarse grit, leave a matte or satin finish. Excellent product to use as a final rub for water-based finishes.

Review: Works well to polish baked polymer clay to a glossy shine - I bought this set after seeing a YouTube video by polymer clay artist Ana Belchi on sanding and polishing baked polymer clay pieces. For certain types of pieces, whether flat or curved, this is a great way to achieve a satin finish or a glossy one without using glazes, as you can avoid drips or other unevenness that sometimes occur with glazes, especially those that you brush on that may leave brush marks. (Sanding would not be appropriate for pieces that have designs painted on the surface, or certain other surface treatments such as glitter, since sanding would likely remove these.) I used the set, in the proper progression, to polish a lentil-shaped bead (a curved piece) I had baked using two colors of clay with two different sheens — one, a sparkly bronze, and the other a matte purple. (I started by sanding the piece first with a 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, even though the instructions say that the 1500 grit is similar to a conventional 400 grit, just to be safe.). As you can see from the photos, the polishing made quite a difference in the shine on both colors. It’s probably more noticeable on the purple, since it was matte. In the photos below, the bead on the left was polished with the Micro Mesh series. The bead on the right was not; that is how it looked after baking and cooling. (The long pin at the bottom of the photos is there just to prop up the beads for photographing.) I began the sanding using water, but as I got to the last few finer grits I used them dry, as I found that the water was interfering with the polishing — that’s how fine the grits are! I’m glad that this set was labeled with the grits, which helped enormously in doing the sanding in the proper order. As I just received and used the set for the first time, I can’t really opine on the durability and longevity, which is why I gave only 4 stars for those features. However, given the relatively brief time one needs to use each grit, I think they’ll last for a while.
Review: Great set of Micromesh pads for smaller projects !!! - This set of Micro Mesh pads are very flexible and easy to work with, and as many other reviewers stated, they are easy to clean and re-use, and will obviously last much longer than sandpaper. The range of grits in the set are ideal for finishing once you are done with the more coarse sanding. After working up to 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper, the Micro Mesh 1500 (which is supposedly approximately equal to 400 grit sandpaper) is a perfect starting point to continue on with finer sanding and polishing. Some of the reviews mentioned the cost was a bit high for the small pads, but I think they are worth the price for my project (building an unfinished kit guitar), especially considering they are very easy to clean, and will likely last until my project is done, and then some. Aside from sanding the guitar body between coats of Tru Oil, the finer grits of Micro Mesh are amazing for polishing the neck, fingerboard, and frets. I would definitely buy them again if needed, but I think these will last for a while !

## Features

- Micro-Mesh is a unique cushioned abrasive that produces a very fine and uniform scratch pattern. The nine grades of abrasives range from 1500 grit to 12000 grit. The 1500 is similar in grit range to conventional 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. The 12000 will leave a scratch pattern that cannot be detected by the human eye and produces a wonderful looking finish. Micro-Mesh abrasives can polish to a high reflective state or leave a matte or satin finish depending upon where you stop.
- Before starting the Micro-Mesh cycle of abrasive sanding, coarse sanding should be done using up to 320 grit sandpaper. Shaping, sawing or turning of the work piece should be complete.Begin with 1500 Micro-Mesh. Sand until all of the sandpaper scratches are removed. Continue with the MICRO-MESH series and cycle up to the desired look (1800, 2400, 3200, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000, 12000). Thinned lemon oil or Danish oil can be applied as a finish on bare wood.
- MicroMesh performs very well in conjunction with polyurethane, polyester, epoxy, lacquer and so on. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended cure times prior to re-coating or applying the finish coat. When you are applying multiple coats, sand from 1500 Micro-Mesh to 3200 or 3600 between coats to remove any orange-peel or dirt. After the final coat has fully cured, polish the surface beginning with 2400 Micro-Mesh and continue through the series (3200-12000) until the desired gloss is achieved.
- Satin finishes are achieved by sanding up to the 3600 grade. The satin finish gets progressively higher in gloss through the 6000 step. High gloss finishes will appear by the 6000 through 12000 step. The wood, the finish used and personal preference determine where to stop. Micro-Gloss liquid abrasive can be hand rubbed onto the finish following the 12000 Micro-Mesh step for an “ultra” high gloss finish.
- 🇺🇸 This Made In the USA KIT INCLUDES: 1 each of the following grit 3 inch by 4 inch sheets: 1500, 1800, 2400, 3200, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000. Also included is a 2 inch by 3 inch foam sanding block. Micro-Mesh can be used wet or dry.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is 1500 grit micro-mesh equal to 1500 grit sandpaper?**
A: No, 1500 micro mesh is roughly equivalent to 400 grit sandpaper (or ~P700).
1500 grit sandpaper is roughly equivalent to 4000 micro mesh.

AO micro mesh is graded the same as regular micro mesh, MXD micro mesh is graded the same as regular sandpaper (so 1500 MXD micro mesh is equal to 1500 grit sandpaper) while MX micro mesh uses a completely different standard such that 240 MX is roughly 400 grit and 600 MX is 1500 grit.

**Q: Can I use denatured alcohol to clean off the shellac? Or do you recommend a better way to clean this?**
A: I just tried it with a piece of 1500, and the grit came right off. I'm still trying to find out how to clean these after wet sanding with boiled linseed oil.

Right. The search continues...

**Q: can this be used to sharpen knives**
A: here's the thing--you can "sharpen" with basically anything abrasive that's harder than the steel you're sharpening. Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide abrasives won't work as well on "super steels" (e.g. CPM S30V, which contain vanadium carbides, pretty hard stuff that really only cuts quickly on diamond or cubic boron nitride) but unless you're going for a mirror polish anything harder than steel will work just fine. The soft backing on micro mesh is great for some applications, and it could give you an interesting 'convex' shape (like using a buffing wheel or belt grinder) if you really work on your technique, but I think you'll find that something like 3M (or other brand) lapping 'films' work much better for maintaining a consistent angle. Sandpaper can work in a pinch, but it loads too much to use dry and it's pretty messy when wet, I'd recommend the "film" sheets over paper if you're serious about starting a real sharpening routine.

**Q: Can these be used on plastic to bring it back to clear?**
A: Yes. They are great on clear or colored plastic. I have been using these for years.
