The stunning new poetry collection from Rupi Kaur, worldwide bestselling author of milk and honey. From Rupi Kaur, the top ten Sunday Times bestselling author of milk and honey, comes her long-awaited second collection of poetry. Illustrated by Kaur, the sun and her flowers is a journey of wilting, falling, rooting, rising and blooming. It is a celebration of love in all its forms. this is the recipe of life said my mother as she held me in her arms as i wept think of those flowers you plant in the garden each year they will teach you that people too must wilt fall root rise in order to bloom Review: The recipe of life is gracefully related to the content and titles of the chapters. - "Sun and her flowers" is a collection of powerful poetry about grief, self abandonment, honoring oneโs roots, love and empowering oneself. The author has related the five chapters of the book to the title in an alluring manner. She relates her poetry to the flowers we plant in our garden, like those delicate flora we too must wilt, fall, root and rise in order to bloom. The recipe of life is gracefully related to the content and titles of the chapters. My suggestion would be to read Rupiโs books slowly and absorb the emotional depth of her poems. Along with the writings, do not forget to appreciate her simple illustrations which are exquisitely linked to the essence of her poetry. I highly recommend this poetry book to everyone and specially to the ones who want to start reading poetry. The poems are simple sentences broken up with spaces making it an easy read. Her writings are so relatable and strong especially for Indians and Indian nationals who have moved to other countries. Review: Read it!!! It will heal your emotional wounds๐๐๐ - What I like about the book is her honesty that comes through her poems that are so gut wrenchingly honest and pure that your heart literally goes out for her. Anybody who has been through any kind of low like being abused, and being heart broken will find solace in her poems. This is my first Poetry book I have read, after my schooling.so I was a bit apprehensive about reading poetry that has me reaching for a dictionary and where the teacher used to break down sentences while you were in a school. Luckily that wasnโt the case here as her poems are so simple that it leaves an indelible impression on your soul. โtrust your body it reacts to right and wrong better than your mind doesโ-Rupi Kaur โI do not need the kind of love That is draining I want someone Who energises me โ โ Rupi Kaur I read this book in Jan,but I couldnโt bring myself to write a review as I was speechless as to how some one can convey so much in a mere sentences still trumps me. Brutal but heartfelt!
Rupi Kaurโs first book Milk and Honey was the first modern poetry book that I read and I loved it. That book was a huge success. So when I found out about her new book I instantly pre-ordered it and when it arrived I read it immediately too (yes only the review is late ๐ ). I had really great expectations from this book as well, and I would say that though not AS GOOD AS Milk and Honey, it was quite close to it and I totally enjoyed it (enjoyed in a sad way? ). This collection is an extension of Milk and Honey. If you are not familiar with Rupi Kaurโs work, then you would find these poems as just written sentences broke abruptly in between. But I guess, thatโs the beauty of her writing? I really like how her words fit perfectly together in her poems. This poetry collection was however quite longer than Milk and Honey. The Sun and Her Flowers is split into five sections: wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming. Each section tackles a different theme. I love how she has compared each section to a flowerโs life. Wilting deals with grief โ when a flower is about to die. Falling is for self-abandonment โ when a flower loses all hopes of living Rooting deals with honoring oneโs roots โ like a new flower preparing its roots to rise again Rising is for love โ the flower is ready for living again Blooming for empowering oneself โ flower blooming and living again With each of these sections, Rupi has presented her own traumatic experiences. She is not shy about those experiences, rather she has written about them in a way that you would want to feel her pain. If you are an Indian or belong to a South Asian country, then you can relate to many of her experiences. Being an Indian, I perfectly related to the sections where she talked about infanticide and feminism, which are a kind of big issues here. She talked about her relationship with her mother. I loved the poems in which she talked about her mother and the struggles her mother faced. Those were my favourites I guess. I have never been out of India so probably I canโt experience the exact emotions of an immigrant. But I guess, I can understand them and Rupi Kaur did a nice job in telling those immigrant experiences. She has added an entire section about immigrants and refugees. You can feel the depth of those and can actually relate to them. Feminism has always been a big part of her poetry and this book was no exception. All that feminism talk actually make you feel motivated. I really liked how she talked about the women being oppressed in her culture (particularly in Indian culture). Those aspects that she talked about are very important to our present situation I guess. She included topics like rape culture, slut-shaming and how people often oppress the girl power. Some things can definitely offend you, but those are brutally honest. I loved the talk about female feticide in India. I love the illustrations. All of her illustrations combine so beautifully with her poetry. You will feel so many emotions at once.. sadness, love, frustration, anger, happiness, self-loathing.. Despite having all these positive points, I guess there were some problematic areas too. I felt that some of the poems were not original. I am not sure of this, but a few felt as if she has taken it from somewhere. Also, there is a lot of sex talk and a few such illustrations too. So if you are not okay with it, you should skip this. Also, I felt that a few poems about feminism, the body, the heartbreak, and self-love were repetitive. All in all, this was really a beautiful and brutal collection of poetry. You will feel connected to Rupi Kaur, especially if you are an immigrant or brown-skinned person. It talks about so many different themes and will make you feel belonged. While Milk and Honey was focused on feminism and self-love, The Sun and Her Flowers is much more than that. And the metaphors using flowers is beautiful. If you have already read Milk and Honey then you should definitely pick it up for a different experience, and if you havenโt read her first book, then also you should pick it up for enjoying Rupiโs style of poetry.

What a beautiful book!
Rupi Kaur had a talk around last month at NSCI in Mumbai. I was really sad I missed it because I really did love Milk & Honey. My friend who caught it told me it was brilliant. And I can imagine! Given just how intense Kaurโs writing is, I imagine it must have been a treat to have her read her poems to the audience. I first read Rupi Kaurโs Milk & Honey while on a flight last year. I remember thinking she was overrated after reading about a third of the book โ she writes about the most obvious things. And yet, as I crossed the halfway mark, I remember thinking sheโs writing about all the things no one ever bothers talking about. How women perceive themselves, their bodies, how small their sense of self can be just because their bodies may not be what a man expects them to be. She continues in the same vein in The Sun and Her Flowers. Written in five chapters โ wilting, falling, rooting, rising and blooming, she beautifully brings to life sentiments that perhaps every woman has experienced at some point. Thoughts on grief and love and self-worth and losing oneself to the point that one doesnโt care, and then slowly finding oneโs way back to oneself. Every now and then, there comes a writer whose painful honesty will get you on most days and you will want to sit with a bunch of people, who donโt yet know whatโs going to hit them and read to them. Even with the really morbid bits of her poems on female foeticide, as you pause to catch your breath, you will find yourself nodding at how real it is. I donโt think words can do justice to how wonderful this book is. I devoured it within a few hours and I would recommend you do the same.

An entirely new genre of graphic poetry or verse writing..say what you will you cannot ignore Rupi Kaur
I first saw Rupi Kaur's name mentioned in the list of writers coming at JLF and was intrigued to learn of a poet whose first book of poems at age 22 sold more 1.5 million copies. Because poetry doesn't sell and isn't for the masses. But that's where Rupi has probably created an entirely new genre....crazy to understand and yet reaching dizzying heights...something like the bitcoin craze nowadays...the more you dismiss it the more it rises.... She's known for her social media posts, also called an 'Instapoet' for her brand of illustrative poems, generating controversy and ban on Instagram for a self portrait photograph showing meneustral blood...there is no doubt that her fame on social media catapulted her to write a book and sell copies of it Equally her illustrative poems are as much about the graphic writing as it is about the drawing (and I love her free flowing art too). Its also about the packaging- the book is exquisitely designed and I loved the way she has promoted it by using her own body. And she has performed her poems to sold out audiences across the world. The Poems can give themselves over to drama and emotion considering they tackle universal emotions like love, loss. They also cover universal social issues which can be identified by many: the identity crisis of migrants, female foeticide, feminism and more. Yes in many senses they are not poems like the way we have been used to reading the masters in schools but if this is one more medium to let the world know your angst and break barriers then why not.... Waiting to read the Second one when it arrives: her first book Milk and Honey

All time favourite poetry book!
All I crave for is Peace & these two: 'Words' & 'Music' are enough to heal anything. โคโค Not a person with much patience to read except if it's Poetry n only Poetry. Right time, I found this book coz to fall in love with life all over again. Last vacay, read Rupi Kaur's 'Milk & Honey' n got inspired to write more, in fact, to write a book on my own. And this vacay, read her second beauty, 'The Sun and Her Flowers' ; amazed n outta words actually. The best thing about her writing is how she divides the chapters beautifully. Well in this book, it goes like, The Wilting, Falling, Rooting, Rising n Blooming. Fav line in d book : She writes to her mom, "Even to be a single thread of her cotton dress would be the greatest gift." More than anything, the courage to pen down the solid truth, the reality, be appreciated. And paving way for the future generation, leaving behind the legacy. Kudos. ๐

Falls a little short in terms of expectations
Despite many claims of Rupi exploiting collective trauma, claims of plagiarism, etc. I like her work. It is honest, simple and comes from the heart. But here's the thing that's bugging me. Compare milk and Honey with the sun and her flowers. I would expect that her view has expanded and she would be writing about other things than what she has already written. But I find it a little disappointing that it is the same old formula of unrequited love, mentally abusive relationship, break-up and ultimately overcoming it. I'm in no way negating her emotions, neither do I want to sound insensitive. But it's a tad bit like watching a two Bollywood movies with pretty much the same story line but with different actors. I finished the first part of it, if my opinions change at the end of it, I'll update here. In terms of packing and delivery Amazon did an amazing job.

Exceptionally Well Written and Presented
'The Sun and Her Flowers' is a marvelous and astonishing read, it is jam-packed with numerous animations and illustrations which enables the reader to visualize their own journey in something called `life`. Moreover, it presents vividly several themes including: trauma, loss, abortion, love etc that will capture the readers eyes in no-time as we have all undertaken English Literature/Language, its very similar to the poems we all encounter and endure as part of our academic studies. I highly endorse it to the readers and possibly include this book as part of the school curriculum education system across the globe as it does mention and talk about immigration too which I strongly believe needs to be taught to raise awareness and to just simply heal individuals. Thanks again Rupi and stay blessed.
