It is the story of the Galactic Empire, crumbling after twelve thousand years of rule. And it is the particular story of psycho-historian Hari Seldon, the only man who can see the horrors the future has in store: a dark age of ignorance, barbarism and violence that will last for thirty thousand years. Gathering together a band of courageous men and women, Seldon leads them to a hidden location at the edge of the galaxy where he hopes they can preserve human knowledge and wisdom against all who would destroy them. Asimov went on to add numerous sequels and prequels to the trilogy, building up what has become known as the Foundation series, but it is the original three books, first published in the Forties and Fifties, which remain the most powerful, imaginative and breathtaking. Review: Exceeds expectations - Didn't expect a hardcover with such a sturdy build and good print at this price range. Needless to say it surpassed my expectations. Review: Great paper quality and binding; Content is brilliant as expected - I bought this book for a steal. You get the three best Foundation novels in this volume, on high quality paper, in a hardbound version. The book also features an extensive chronology stating when the Foundation and other major Asimov books were written, along with the significant historical events around that time. The introduction is terrible though. I expected better stuff on a seminal work like the Foundation series. The Dark ages that Asimov talks about, for instance, were most likely inspired by Gibbon's "History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" and how the burning of the Library at Alexandria pushed science behind several centuries. I need not say much on the Foundation series. If you are a science fiction fan, you have to read the three novels in this volume. My favourite is the first one.

Fine hardcover edition collecting Asimov's seminal work
First off, I took down one star from the rating because the copy I received had a puncture on the edge of the spine, right through the dust jacket itself; a result of poor storage and handling I guess. There is very little to say about the contents of this book except for the fact that this is one of the cornerstones of Sci-Fi literature and one of Asimov's best pieces. This hardbound edition is a fine way to get your hand on the original Foundation trilogy laying out the three novels back to back. In addition to the 3 novels and the customary forward to the text, there is an interesting chronology charting and paralleling the defining moments in the real world and in Sci-Fi and ends with a glossary of characters appearing through out the course of the trilogy. About the presentation of the edition itself - It is a very nice cloth bound copy with a dust jacket, minimally gilded lettering appearing on the spine. Its a sewn copy and not a glued one which also means that it will definitely last longer than the usual paperback or glued hardcover. Another reason to pick up the book would be because this is probably the only available edition collecting the series. Most of Asimov's other works are published as mass market paperbacks by Voyager.

Must own for a sci-fi fan!
If you want to buy the foundation series books, this is the book to buy. Contains the original 3 books of the foundation series. Great binding, good paper quality and print. Very good introduction (I would recommend skipping it at the start and come back to it after finishing the story). Very interesting chronology outlining the life of Asimov and provides historic and literary context at the time. Must own book for a sci-fi fan!

A must-have edition.
This book is a must have as it is the only easily available anthology of the first three books of the Foundation Series. The print and binding are both excellent. There's a fantastic introduction and a chronology that maps historical events with the author's life and literary achievements. Much better than the paperback editions. Totally worth it!

What is there anything to say about Asimov? He is the prince of science fiction. A person who makes a new track through wild country(read Galaxy). By Seldon! Asimov is a genius.

Still a great read
I first read it when I was 20 and I was fascinated. Now at almost 50 I bought it for my son and instead read it again myself and what shall I say? I still love it. Sure, it is a bit dated. Also I remembered the Mule too well for any real tension to develop - but hey! Probably one of the best schi-fi books ever and well worth reading it even if you are not so much into sci-fi.
