Have the mesh screen tearing issues been fixed?

Bought mine in 2019 and never had any issues with the mesh and I use it all the time. Be gentle when scooping the yogurt out of it. After using it, I rinse the mesh really well, then fill the container with clean water and put the inner part with the mesh back into the container and let it soak for a bit before hand-washing very gently and letting it air dry.

What is the mesh made of ... stainless steel or something else?

If you're on the fence about which strainer of the two Euro Cuisine makes - this is the one to get. It's a nylon fabric mesh fabric and I love it, just bought my third. I used the first two and then passed then on to friends who I'd taught to make Greek yogurt. I then treated myself to the metal mesh one (which I had been "Jonesing" for) and it doesn't work as well. With this strainer I could make almost 3 quarts of Greek yogurt from yogurt made with a gallon of milk. The whey that was drained off was clear and golden. With the metal strainer the drained product was milky yellow and I was unable to get two full quarts of yogurt with the same gallon of milk. I'm assuming that I was throwing away a lot of yogurt that drained through the less fine mesh.

No, the item is used AFTER you make your yogurt in the IP. Once your yogurt is completed in the IP, you turn pour it into this product to separate out the whey. The longer you let it sit, the thicker your yogurt becomes.

Next question- this reads to me as the strainer to make yogurt into Greek Yogurt. Any recommendations on a Yogurt maker to accompany this?

You do not need a yogurt maker. I make the yogurt in the oven in a deep dish casserole (big enough to hold 1/2 gallon of milk). When thickened it goes into the strainer for 24 to 48 hours to strain off the whey, thus Greek yogurt.
