The key to not getting it on your hands is to empty the pail when it gets full. It is easy to overfill it with the arm and hammer extension bags. **Q: Does the pail come with bags** A: It comes with a few--maybe 5 or so? But you will need refills very soon. **Q: what is the pail made of plastic or steel?** A: It's plastic. The 'metallic' parts are silver plastic. It's super easy to clean. **Q: Reviews of a different model mentions the "squish effect" when depositing the diaper in the narrow opening of the diaper pail. Is this an issue?** A: Old question but answering for anyone curious: yes, you have to push soiled diapers through the narrow opening. However, this hasn't caused us to get anything gross on our fingers or caused a struggle. My kid is very big for her age and wears size 7 Pampers. I take off dirty diapers and tightly wrap the sides around the diaper to make it very compact. The only time we have an issue is with her AM diaper that she wore to bed because it's fully saturated with pee, so it can be weird getting through the hole.
