To start off with, the counter balance just beeps whenever its in need of assistance getting the weight sorted out, then it turns off - which can make it seem as if the product lost battery when it didn't. As well, the "AI" tracking module isn't very efficient, using quite a lot of battery when in my opinion it would've been better off an individually powered unit with a USB C for charging, or charging built into the carrying case for a bit more money. As well both this, the charging speed and the supported weight are all better on the Hohem competition - but I picked this unit for its better reliability, even if only by a margin. It's taken a lot to get used to, and improvements such as the aforementioned or increasing motor speed would help tremendously with a future unit, but I'd say it was a good investment - at least while it's still functioning. Fingers crossed mine doesn't end up like some other reviews have indicated for the price.

I was having issues with the original gimbal I received, but I contacted the seller, and they replaced the gimbal with a new one which appears to be working correctly. This gimbal is really cool and pairs easily with my Android phone. Once you figure out how to use it, it really helps level up your video shots.

The media could not be loaded. While filming, my gimbal occasionally vibrates uncontrollably (see attached recording), and the vortex mode only makes the phone tilt upward instead of functioning as expected. I suspect the unit I received might be defective. Rather than going through the hassle of a replacement, I've decided to return it and explore other brands.

I don’t often use a gimbal, and the no-frills, budget model I’ve had for years has generally served me well. The high-end appearance of the ZHIYUN Smooth 5S AI gimbal definitely caught my attention. Depending on the type of shooting you do, your tech savvy and risk tolerance, this gimbal has many advanced features to offer. For my purposes, I’ll be getting by without them.At a minimum, I wanted to check the device firmware status and perform an auto-calibration, both of which are available through the companion software. I selected the free rather than the “full” subscription app version download—an unexpected option that I found off-putting. But things got worse. The firmware is a PTZ file type, which despite using several apps, I spent way too much time trying to open. That may have been a good thing, because when I tried to run the calibration exe. file, it was promptly quarantined by McAfee Antivirus—this after having to click my way past countless intrusions by those annoying ads in the app offering to update ALL my drivers on nearly every screen. Don’t know how they get there. Don’t want them.The app is home to many of the advanced features. Fortunately, it is not needed for basic tracking, which suits me fine as the majority of my gimbal use will be hand-held video in Point of View mode that does not require gyrating finger gestures, display effects or single-click video editing templates. The basic ZHIYUN controls are easy to operate, and the movements are smooth and configured as expected. The camera mount that swivels from portrait to landscape orientation is a plus, but I found the Mode/Battery/Status indicator light panel to be small and difficult to read. The Smooth 5S has a substantial in-hand feel and a comfortable, rubbery grip. There is a built-in fill light with a harsh but adjustable output. Additional lights are sold separately.Included are a compact tripod, a Service Card and VIP & Warranty Card, a ZHIYUN Prime One-Year Membership Card, a USB Type-C charging cable, a quick start guide and a Disclaimer and Warnings booklet.
