Not even an hour in and I have to write a postive review

*by E***I on Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024*

I do IT for a company and have to travel between sites. I was looking for a smaller-size keyboard that would fit in my backpack, actually had wireless capabilities (instead of only Bluetooth), and didn't have sketchy macro software. I didn't want Bluetooth only because I didn't want to use this on someone else's computer spending so many minutes trying to configure it. After looking around on eBay and NewEgg, I chose this, and am already contemplating switching my other boards to this. RoyalAxe.UNWRAPPING: The board comes in a well-padded and protected box with a synthetic wrapping and a plastic cover. I don’t know if I would trust this clear cover on my keyboard in my backpack, but for what it’s worth, it’s better than nothing and definitely protects against bag debris (if there is such a thing comparable to “purse dirt”). I don’t think it was meant for long-term use though, only to protect the keys during initial transport, as the cover doesn’t stay on the keyboard when you rotate the board upside-down. It also comes with a high quality, detachable, coiled keyboard cable. I have to add a couple things of interest on this minor piece. The cable is packed with a styrofoam wrap around the USB-A port while the USB-C port is tucked into the coil itself. Little things like that really made a good impression. This beast also comes with ingenious back feet that can be switched out. One pair has a low and medium height while the other has medium and high height. Along with the user manual comes a quick attachment guide showing you the methods to connect the keyboard with the USB-C cable, via Bluetooth (and up to three devices), and the 2.4 GHz wireless mode. The manual doesn’t show everything such as how to swap the feet out (they stay in but not snap in), as well as detaching the keyboard cable, but no biggie. The smaller ring of the two barrels gets loosened, then when it’s off of the screw you can pull the cable away from the other end. I found it nice that they supplied both a switch removal tool and a keycap removal tool instead of a single tool that does both. Why have two instead of one? Well, how often do you swap out switches in a keyboard? If you lose one tool, you lose both a keycap puller and a switch puller. You may prefer the cheaper ring-style keycap puller as well. These tools have a nice finger hole in the center for extra weight and balance when pulling caps and switches. I had to look through my old tools and didn’t find one with that feature.SWITCHES: I currently use Akko 5075B boards both at home at work; milky yellow switches on one and speed silver switches on the other. The test drive with some switches is what makes or breaks the fun factor or comfort factor. I don't know if it's solely the Gateron GPro 3.0 Yellow or the addition of the cushioning materials in this board, but I seriously don't want to stop using this for typing. Y'ever use a tool to do a job, you finish the job, but using the tool makes you want to do more work or inspires you to do something? This is how the RoyalAxe Y68 makes me feel. Your mileage may vary based on your tastes, but trust me on this one. Just from using these switches, my existing boards feel too light. These switches and the overall board make me want to slow down my typing a bit to embrace the feel of each keystroke and to prevent making mistakes. There used to be a chocolate candy with the slogan, “To be eaten as it was made; slowly”, and this board feels similar. My girlfriend is not into keyboards as much as I am, but I had to share the feel for her. She probably didn’t expect anything (because we don’t share exactly all of the same interests), but the sound and feel must have gotten to her as she frowned her eyes and nodded her head saying, “ooOOOOoo!”. I have a feeling that sharing this around the office and introducing mechanical keyboards to non-tech users may invoke the same reaction or better. Hell, it may end up being used as a bargaining chip in hostage negotiations! She mentioned the weight of it, but I explained to her that because it’s wireless, it has a larger battery inside that provides weight.MACRO SOFTWARE: The software can be found on the ProtoArc website under Support → Downloads. I was surprised to see the ProtoArc logo on the box at first as I saw a few keyboards by them when looking for the size, connectivity, and macro features. Even with the easily-pronounceable name and overall design, it feels legit. I say this as I’ve purchased two Next Time 75 boards from AliExpress where the software came from the Internet and was discovered to have malware nesting inside of it.The overall design looks eerily similar to the Akko software, which only makes me feel more at home. Make a change, save it, and the keyboard acts properly to the change. No need to program anything, then send those changes to the device. While this features be mainstream these days, I like the fact that the keyboard keeps the settings when you use it on another device. I wanted a keyboard where it would keep my login, password, email greeting, and other commonly-typed strings in its memory. With some devices, they only respond if the software for the device is on the host machine. Now imagine taking the time to do all that by putting sketchy software on every user’s machine and breaking company protocol, possibly compromising security in the same action.By using macros, I can type out my long name and long domain (which includes a domain over 15 characters) and my password to avoid misspellings and failed login attempts. Just like the Akko software, one key enters my name and domain and enters the Tab key, and another key enters my password. If I am forced to use the keyboard of the user I’m supporting, I don’t know what they’ve been eating over their keyboard unlike the a repeat offender with sunflower seed shells between keys. Even with Covid precautions going down, being able to use my own keyboard puts others at ease, where they may not even notice my own sunflower seed shells.DESIGN: I love the industrial (or sports-like if you’re from Pittsburgh), dark gray and gold-ish color combo. It gives it an industrial feel, and the gunmetal connector switch in the upper right adds similar flair. The yellow/gold bands around the edges with the vents add even more flair, giving it a construction-y DeWalt tool appearance. The keyboards I’ve used in the past tend to keep the wireless dongles tucked away on the underside. That’s a pretty good design, but RoyalAxe steps up the efficiency by storing the dongle in the keyboard itself near the upper right switch. My plans are to store this on a USB-C 4-port hub that already houses a flash drive and another wireless dongle for a mouse. The dongle is small enough making it difficult to break off and damage both the device and the USB port itself.IF YOU USE THE F-KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD REGULARLY, TAKE NOTE: The primary Function key for Windows apps is still located between the right Alt and Control keys. But to trigger any macros you make, you have to use the other Function key to the far right above the Delete key. I’m okay with this as I plan to use it only to trigger my logins and passwords when using it on other people’s computers.OVERALL: As much as I enjoy using the Akkos and having the volume knob at the upper right, I can’t seem to beat the over key feel, sound, softness, and details of the Y68. Not only did RoyalAxe/ProtoArc do their homework and more on this; the little touches with the packaging, coiled keyboard cable, and software at a price of $50 (as of 4/2024) after 44% off make this hard to beat. Why should you take a chance on this? Y68!

    Perfect

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2024*

Got this for the office and I love it. Had a friend type on it and she bought one too. I look for reasons to type anything because the keys are so smooth and spaced apart perfect. The color is also fun!

    Great keyboad

*by D***O on Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2024*

If you like near silent keyboards this is great for you. It feels like really good quality. Its very sturdy due to the weight. It feels really soft and do not need to really press down the key to type. The price is perfect for the quality you get with this keyboard. I've enjoyed it a lot. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is due to the keys not lighting up. The board does but I would of love if the keys would have the number and letters lighting up as well instead of them being printed.
