This book IS a great book if you have C-PTSD
This book IS a great book if you have C-PTSD. He says at the start of the book that complex, or developmental trauma, is intertwined with shock trauma, and that people can heal a substantial portion of their trauma through using this book. He also says that if you have suffered complex trauma that you should use these exercises along with other kinds of therapy, to deal with the mental side of things. These exercises are very healing for complex trauma survivors, especially any issues you have with 'emotions', such as intense anxiety, rage, grief, depression, apathy. This book is excellent for working through these emotions, and these emotions often plague survivors of complex trauma. The healing exercises in this book really work, and are very healing if you suffer from C-PTSD or PTSD. They have enabled me to heal a lot of my intense emotions, such as intense anxiety, grief or pain in the heart, and some of my depression. They have also put me in touch with a wonderful sense of aliveness, and have helped me feel a deep inner strength. These changes have been awesome, and far beyond what anything else has achieved. I live with minimal anxiety, or PTSD symptoms as a result of this book. The complex aspect of my trauma, such as trust issues, confidence etc, still needs to be worked on but this book is really wonderful for anyone who has experience multiple trauma. Don't be put off by the other reviews.

A valuable resource
Working on the basis that trauma disconnects a person with their body, Levine proposes a series of twelve simple exercises to carry out to 'reconnect' and heal trauma. With plenty of supporting information at the beginning, the book feels to the reader who has suffered from trauma - understanding, encouraging and reassuring. This will be a valuable resource to anyone in the process of healing from past trauma, both physical and emotional, when psychological methods can be too heavily based on the mind and thinking. I am glad to have found this book, simple and small enough to carry around with practical solutions to panic. Highly recommended.

A helpful hand in your healing
Healing from trauma takes time and patience, but according to Peter Levine it can be done, and people have done it. In fact, it's an innate ability in animals to move on from trauma, but humans don't always use this ability. Trauma is intrinsic to your body as well as your mind, and there are several exercises in the book to change the way you relate to your body and move on from trauma. I'm using this in conjunction with therapy, dealing with an unstable childhood seeing a lot of chaos where people could change from happy to screaming at a drop of a hat. ( as a lot of people have also experienced). The exercises so far, I feel have been helpful to me. If you're struggling, I want to tell you there's hope out there and inside you and this book could be one of the things that helps you on your journey.

A genuinely supportive book and CD, from a man with vast experience and sensitivity to the subject.
This is a sensitive subject, and a difficult one to support effectively; however, this book, with it's accompanying CD, guide the reader (either therapist or victim) through some safe and releasing exercises, that both deal with the past held-onto trauma in the body and emotions, and provide tools for managing further experiences (of other trauma, or the same, but on another level; empowering confidence for the future. A genuinely supportive book and CD, from a man with vast experience and sensitivity to the subject.

Interesting
Having been to a 'working with trauma' workshop I thought I would start with this but the CD is not what I expected so may get one of Peter Levine's other books which I think will be more helpful to me.

debilitating and painful symptoms. This book is a life saver
An absolute revolution in approaches to healing trauma. Peter Levine has changed my whole perception of my illness. He studied the behaviour of prey animals who, after a brush with death, quickly return to normal, in a way traumatised humans don't. Trauma is a physiological not mental problem, resulting from unexpelled energy trapped in the nervous system. The author discusses the freeze aspect of the fight/flight/freeze response that occurs when we're overwhelmed and lack the resources to move through an event we experience as life threatening. If we don't discharge the torrent of frozen 'survival energy' by shaking it off in some way, it stays with us, over time causing a host of increasingly dramatic, debilitating and painful symptoms. This book is a life saver, providing scientific evidence for what I've felt but have never, until now, been able to explain. My whole body breathed a huge sigh of relief when I started reading the Twelve Phase Healing Programme and I'm very positive about my prognosis.

The book is
The book is written in a way easy to read by people which native language isn't English. The only thing I disliked was the CD, as it turned out we do not have CD-rom in our house. But that's my problem. The book is offering wisdom and help and it's only 100pages.

At last! a user-friendly manual for both therapist and patient working on trauma!
As a psychotherapist who specializes in working with individuals who have a history of trauma, I have sought for the past 20 years in books and seminars all the latest in treatment. I recently discovered Peter A. Levine's remarkable and compassionate books on the subject of trauma and its treatment; "Waking the Tiger" and "In an Unspoken Voice." Everything I had ever learned practiced, or observed in 20 years of practice came together in his work. What I like best is how Levine gets into the body and the emotions of the sufferer. His explanations are natural and flow from a profound understanding of the biology and the experience of trauma. He avoids scientific jargon and sterile, clinical terminology to prove his scholarly understanding of the subject. He defines, explains, interprets, and illustrates -- through masterful integration of science and clinical experience. How surprised I was when I discovered the small, instructive manual, with CD teaching of its exercises, "Healing Trauma: A Pioneering Program for Restoring the Wisdom of Your Body"! This small book with its very concise distillations of Levine's understanding of how trauma affects the body, together with specific healing exercises, is invaluable for patients and their therapists working together. Another Levine triumph: helpful, informative, with the same caring concern for the healing journey.
